Just got word that our Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) Grant was being canceled. All 100+ institutions. So even private funding is susceptible to this administration’s unraveling of DEI initiatives

My dept was awarded a 6-year Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) grant in 2023. My chair just got word that it will be terminated in a month.

Extremely disappointed to see HHMI decide to kill their Inclusive Excellence program, including terminating the current IE3 awards to over a hundred institutions effective this year in the middle of a 6-year grant. I was hoping HHMI (and other private funders) would continue to lead the way.

Ces images bizarres, ces pensées qui partent dans tous les sens… ce n’est pas du hasard. La science commence à comprendre ce qui se passe dans votre tête au moment où vous vous endormez.

Stepping through IE3 code. As one does in the year of our lord 2025.

Dear @hhmi.bsky.social: As a private organization with billions of available dollars, you should have been exactly the kind of organization to resist government overreach. There is no earthly reason why IE3 should have been shut down. So many are saddened and angry.

Here's the epic closer on MK's 5th true solo record, an under promoted disc that has really grown on me over the years, offering several previously undiscovered gems :

Been in this industry since 1996, and the fanciest thing we had to think about was a server-side include…and that was also just pulling in plain HTML. But don’t make me re-live IE3 browser compatibility nightmares…
This. You know what was good? Plain HTML pages with text and images and hyperlinks. Maybe a single banner ad at the top to fund it. Not something that loads literally gigabytes of random executable code from hundreds of different domains to show you one three-paragraph article and fifty video ads.
The Internet is worse than ever because we, the people who build websites, have allowed our “good user experience” standard to erode as hardware has improved. Too much focus on specific technologies, too little focus on impact.

Yup. And I’m 2 for 2 - HHMI IE3 a few months ago, and NSF yesterday.
Catching up with colleagues and I feel like "have any of your grants been terminated yet" is the new "have you had COVID yet" from 2022 and I hate it.

Still have flashbacks to trying to line up spacer gifs in padded tables to get both IE3 and Netscape to display reasonably well - used to have ‘browser compatibility expert in my CV’

And Fideo is the other IE3 deuteragonist who had a game version devoted to him who keeps getting into merch

For HHMI to undo all the hard work David Asai and other leaders put in for this program is shameful. The IE3 program has accomplished great things. At my institution the IE3 we had several years ago became an institutionalized fellows program that has advanced our teaching.

@hhmi.bsky.social should explain IE3 actions. Trump threats to them may be illegal, and should be aired in public, for all to see. HHMI is a private organization with incredibly deep pockets. If HHMI cannot or refuses to push back, what hope is there for less resourced people and organizations?

fun fact for localization-only players: the returning players (bar scouts, they were the only thing in the gacha as god intended) in IE3 were debatably even more annoying to get in the japanese version!
(this is referring to the bond clovers ftr, though even then player's universe is better than 2/3 palpack/kizunax implementations and the gacha from IE3-EU and ESPECIALLY the JP alternative methods to that.)

These programs have no tie at all to affirmative action, and HHMI even brought out some top-shelf education lawyers last summer to talk to the IE3 community about why the IE3 program was not impacted by the affirmative action ruling. These programs fund pedagogical and curricular development.

And no mention to the IE3 (Inclusive Excellence program) awardees? All the information was deleted from the website, is like they never existed?

Union College lost its IE3 funding too. How disappointing.

I feel bad for people at under-resourced institutions and untenured faculty & staff who were relying on the on IE3 grant to improve student learning & success. At some PUIs the IE3 grant is part of the tenure packet. What happens to their careers? The ripples are significant.
