This week for the Day of the #ImprisonedWriter, we’re featuring the five honorees of the #FreedomToWrite Award who remain in prison: Narges Mohammadi, Xu Zhiyong, Ilham Tohti, Vladyslav Yesypenko, and Pham Doan Trang.

To mark Day of the #ImprisonedWriter today, send a message of solidarity through our letter-writing campaign, #PENWrites, and join indie bookshops across the UK who are taking part.

Kansainvälinen PEN vaatii kiireellisiä kansainvälisiä toimia kirjailijoiden ja toimittajien suojelemiseksi eri puolilla maailmaa, koska he joutuvat yhä useammin vainon kohteeksi tai jopa vangituiksi. www.pen-international.org/identity-on-... #ImprisonedWriter

Jewher continued, “A healthy society allows and has capacity for more than one kind of voice or opinion.”

2024 marks a decade since #ImprisonedWriter Ilham Tohti was sentenced to life in prison for “separatism” for his Uyghur human rights advocacy.

#ImprisonedWriter Xu Zhiyong is now serving 14 years in China’s Lunan prison. He has been on hunger strike for more than 40 days to protest the denial of his right to communicate with his fiancée. free-xu-ding.github.io/open-letter-...

We urge the Chinese authorities to respect Xu Zhiyong’s human rights and release him from prison. We call on international governments to press for Xu’s release and urge the Chinese government to end restrictions on Xu’s human rights. #ImprisonedWriter

... “But I will not stop campaigning until human rights and justice prevail in my country,” Narges Mohammadi wrote in her book White Torture.

#ImprisonedWriter Narges Mohammadi is serving over 13 years in prison in Iran, as her health deteriorates due to medical neglect.

Writers offer the ability to imagine different futures. “It’s impossible, even under the most restrictive regimes, to control language and the imagination that fuels it,” says Dinaw Mengestu, novelist and Vice President of PEN America, on the Day of the #ImprisonedWriter. pen.org/day-of-the-i...
