As Bat Week draws to a close, let’s celebrate the bat flower, Tacca chantrieri. This plant gets its name from the two bracts that spread out behind the inflorescence, resembling the outspread wings of a bat! Happy Bat Week & Happy Halloween. #batweek #Dioscoreaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱🦇

"Le principal trait morphologique commun à cette famille tient à la présence d’un capitule, autrement dit d’une inflorescence, un ensemble de fleurs regroupées à leur base par un involucre de bractées."

I took this pic at Kew Gardens, London. The corpse flower typically grows 6 to 10 feet tall (about 2 to 3 meters) when in bloom, making it the largest unbranched inflorescence (flowering structure) in the plant kingdom. It is truly impressive! 😲

It’s like some sort of botanical octopus emerging from the sand! This is Urodon dasyphyllus, a small prostrate shrub with dense terminal inflorescence. It’s Such a stand out in the sandplains of Tutanning!

The spooooookiest plant in the Nobody Nursery inventory is Oplopanax horridus (devil’s club). In the deep of the hemlock woods the smooth stems slither through the dark until rising up like a charmed snake, their broad leaves casting shadows onto the ghost pipe, gnome-plant, phantom orchid …

Clouded Sulphur answers: "It's still warm, this is still blooming, and I came out of my caul two days ago."

Human, "It's not a caul, it's a crysalis."

Clouded Sulfur: "Whatever. Bet you didn't even have a caul." (Flies to next inflorescence.)

Barringtonia procera is a tree with long, dangling inflorescences that hang at the ends of branches for easy access by bats, & the night-blooming stamen-flowers are easily seen in moonlight. They attract bats that forage by sight & smell, not echolocation. #batweek #Lecythidaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱🦇

The lure of new and unfamiliar is powerful.

I get terribly excited seeing a plant species I don't know. Last year I went to Crested Butte and saw this magnificent species from the poppy family.

Could the weird rod-shaped inflorescence be from a grass tree?

Genus sounds like a disease, haha.

"Dreams of summer"
Viper's bugloss (Echium vulgare), a pretty plant that blooms from late spring to very late summer. As many members of the borage family, the flower buds are pink, while the flower petals are blue.

This week I've mostly been looking at fungi...

But here are a couple of flowers that I couldn't ignore - Wild Angelica complete with a Common Carder Bee and a freshly opened Nettle-leaved Bellflower.
