since i'm getting my own embroidery machine finally (!!!!!!) i'm looking into embroidery digitising software and most of it's rly expensive but I've found a couple free options like inkstitch and ember and am watching some tutorials on using them

Inkscape is awesome! So is Inkstitch for machine embroidery!

Playing around with updating an "old" patch design for the 6-needle machine. Still touching these up before stitching them out.
Fun that I am able to work on these on my Steam Deck.

I did this. I drew it on InkScape, converted it to InkStitch, solved issues, and stitched it with my embroidery machine twice to make a border.
The design is simple, but I am stupidly proud of myself. Now to stitch it on my daughter's RenFest costume!

Neuer Versuch (rechts unten). Leider war die oberfadenspannung zu hoch und deshalb sieht man den schwarzen unterfaden teilweise. Außerdem ist mir zwei mal der oberfaden gerissen (fadenspannung?) und zwei mal die Nadel abgebrochen. #inkstitch #machineembroidery

also be aware that embroidery programs can be extremely pricey, but inkstitch is a free alternative when you start. :D
some brands also have free apps i think? like, brother has an app for making embroidery patterns but i havent tried that one myself... 🤔

The biggest downside is that the easy programs for digitizing (converting art into things you can embroider) cost like $2000, which is more than the machine, especially if you get a little one like mine.
I’m getting better with InkStitch, which is free, but it doesn’t have the same functionality.

If you wonder what goes into the patches I'm making: I'm using an extension for the program InkScape called InkStitch! It converts a vectored image to something an embroidery machine can read, and you can do something similar to a merrowed edge (it's a bitch to outline, you have to do it manually)

Ugh, I love making patches but I wish I still had the good software. The InkStitch stuff isn’t terrible it just takes a lot more effort to create.
I’m getting better at it, it’s just taking a lot of thread.

-used an SS of the original plush's shirt text
-put it into inkstitch to get the vector
-digitized in inkstitch
added hook/loop as the back closure
just need to finish wingies

The process of creating a design from scratch for our new embroidery machine is quite fiddly and the supplied software limited. Members have been coming up with a workflow for inkstitch.org that means we can use open source software to produce designs for it. We're almost there...
