🦋 It's #InsectWeek and we're celebrating the Small Tortoiseshell - a familiar but declining #butterfly in UK gardens.

Want to help? 🌿 Leave a patch of nettles in your garden! It’s the only foodplant for their caterpillars.

Be sure to add them to your weekly list!

Can a wildlife garden also grow food?
Yes!

Buglife Blog ~ Can a wildlife garden also grow food? Yes, we can do both!
To invite insects to your garden, you must leave them space, which isn’t how most gardens are designed. Nature’s Acre author, Ciarán De Buitléar, shares how he overcame this.

Insect Week starts on Monday.

Insects pollinate our food, recycle nutrients, feed birds and mammals and keep ecosystems functioning, yet many are struggling.

A few simple changes in an ordinary garden can make a real difference.

There are almost 300 species of hoverfly in the UK. They are important pollinators and consumers of aphids, and although some of them might look like wasps, they are actually harmless!

Many species are quite easy to identify - here's a selection below:

Hey dude, where’re your Bono shades 😎💜🐝🌿

I’m glad to say, we still have a lot of hover-flies in the garden & quite a few bumblebees 🐝 but a noticeable lack of honey bees! #insectThursday #InsectWeek #wildlifegarden

It’s the perfect summer weather to be spotting members of the Oedemeridae, the false blister beetles. Beautiful metallic colours frolicking on meadow vegetation. This thick legged flower beetle is pumped! 🪲 💚 #InsectWeek

The Fairy-ring Longhorn Beetle (Pseudovadonia livida) is small and flower loving. An anomaly amongst most longhorns, its larvae developing in soil where Fairy-ring fungus grows, rather than dead wood. Adults love pollen and nectar from umbellifer flowers, as well as they love to mate 💚 🪲 #InsectWeek
