Couple of illustrations for a school project, the spotted lanternfly and its instars (larvae). These guys are incredibly invasive in the US.

Hongming Kan of "Australian Invertebrates, Bugs & Insects" FB group captured the full life-cycle from egg to adult in his own backyard.

You'll notice several stages (instars) of awkward development to our crowned emperors.

In the garden this morning a gathering of Southern Green Shieldbugs, Nezara viridula, maybe 3rd, 4th & 5th instars. Are they missing the climbing beans that were dug up a week ago?! 😬 Lower right photo seams to show nymph with discarded exuvia.

They grow up so fast! 🤗

Today, I awoke in time to PREVENT tragedy!

Mantises go through phases called "instars" as they grow up. Every time a mantis reaches a new instar, they molt, and approximately double in size.

Flippin heck
I found two of these eating raspberry leaves today. According to Google and obs they’re Emperor moth early instars, but, on Raspberry? #teammoth

YES, THIS

A spider, I could root for. But stink bugs, roaches, and spotted lanternfly instars get the boot, literally.

Bronze Shieldbug and three different instars. It is amazing how each stage is so different. Look out for the adults from July in the UK. #shieldbugs

Southern Green Shieldbugs (3rd & 5th instars, I think), sunning themselves on Wisteria in the garden yesterday. #KentNature #bugs #Shieldbugs

My neighbor's porch is near her neighbor's many planted milkweed plants - these are instars of milkweed assassin bugs (I think!) in a cluster circle ... last year I got some close up photos on a zinnia leaf #Inverts

Good morning from the milkweed garden.

A tour through the instars:

Epoida's powers are pretty much unknown, he has combat prowess but apart from having a very large caterpillar form, the true extent of his abilities is left ambiguous.

so I went a little nuts.

And then there were 14! I can only assume early instars of Cinnabar caterpillars feed low down before moving to the upper parts of the plant. @rlewington2.bsky.social @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social

I'm seeing more shieldbugs on my walks now, and this is my go-to site for help with ID.

The superb illustrations allow easy comparison between life stages and are particularly useful for identifying nymphs, and various instars. #bugs #invertebrates #nature

It is awesome to learn about the instars of spoonbills. This is the kind of information I require.

Got a bit of an earwig project going at the mo, incl rearing Lesser Earwigs. Seems to be going well: here are 21 wiglets from eggs laid on April 4th - 18 4th (= final) instars & 3 3rd instars. Expecting them to moult to adulthood imminently.

Hello little Vapourer moth caterpillar, how adorable are you?

1st spotted this cutie last week, newly hatched & mostly black in colour. Caterpillars go through various stages (instars). This one already resembles the fully grown caterpillar.

Hope the sparrows don’t find him/her.. #teammoth #nature
