Très souvent entendu et je l'utilise volontiers, au sens de "langue commune, pas forcément 'langue de culture' mais au moins d'usage, permettant une intercompréhension entre des populations de cultures différentes"

C'est marrant j'ai souvenir d'une conf de romaniste qui disait que la non-intercompréhension était surestimée en prenant comme argument la tournée de l'Illustre Théâtre de Molière à travers la France.

every day I am reminded that I should probably learn french academically beyond the 6 weeks I took in middle school and my intercomprehension skills from spanish and italian (my parents were the francophones) but I don't wanna have to review IPA just to be able to pronounce things 😭 I don't wanna!!!
I should point out I can read Portuguese ok and, given time to adjust, I can understand Portuguese people alright, but even they have a hard time understanding Brazilians… so it was not a “I suck at Romance languages intercomprehension” case!

I should point out I can read Portuguese ok and, given time to adjust, I can understand Portuguese people alright, but even they have a hard time understanding Brazilians… so it was not a “I suck at Romance languages intercomprehension” case!

So I do translation as well but our department also focuses on translanguaging/intercomprehension between the Romance languages, so for example we have Italian and French courses designed specifically for Spanish speakers to take advantage of their existing skills and I teach the Italian courses

Un “Que sais-je ?” sur les langues scandinaves avait d'ailleurs tout un développement pour montrer à quel point, malgré toutes ses différences, l'islandais partageait des structures profondes avec les autres. Ce qui ne veut pas dire qu'il y ait intercompréhension.

Il peut y avoir intercompréhension entre locuteurs de langues différentes (tchèque et polonais ou espagnol et portugais), mais en gros, oui.

Tamajeq and tetserret are very similar, especially since they are spoken in the same society. But intercomprehension is very difficult between the two languages

Tamajeq and tetserret are very similar, especially since they are spoken in the same society. But intercomprehension is very difficult between the two languages
Intercomprehension between the romance languages is my area of expertise (outside of translation) and finding these words is catnip, because then I get to go down the rabbit hole. My colleague is a linguistic anthropologist so sometimes I just ask her haha

a rabbit hole lead be to finding there are two better words for this: intercomprehension (understanding a related language you never formally learned) + translanguaging (one unified linguistic repertoire, not separate switches). changes how I think about picking up languages gradually.
