Happy #BogDay! 🥳

Today is all about brilliant bogs, super swamps, fantastic fens and marvellous marshes! Did you know that bogs cover just 3% of the world's surface but studies have found they hold nearly 30% of soil carbon!

It's International Bog Day!
If you've not already done it, please help preserve peatland bogs by switching to peat-free compost.
(Please ignore any 🦖🦖 claiming you can't grow without peat 😄)
I totally recommend Melcourt Sylvagrow multi-purpose compost.

Today is #InternationalBogDay. Also, 3rd anniversary of Sinéad O'Connor's death. I happened to be in #Dublin the night she died, researching #bogs, #IronAge bog bodies for the book I #AmWriting (begun as I pursued my writing MFA the past 2 years.) Wrote this at the time. substack.com/home/post/p-...

Ireland's peatlands are environmental powerhouses — storing vast amounts of carbon, filtering water, and sustaining rare wildlife. Green Restoration Ireland works with farmers on peatland water table management to protect these ecosystems.

Its #internationalbogday so I'm going to suggest you all watch 'From the Dark' which is excellently Irish film about a peat bog that has zero Irish cliches and a pretty kick ass female lead.

Been researching, writing on #bogs, preservation for 3+ years now. A thread on how #wildfires on dried out #peatlands are particularly difficult to control/extinguish. Today is #InternationalBogDay. An important read on these vital carbon sinks. #Boglands need re-wetting, restoration, preservation.
I join you from the Blaenavon wildfire in Southeast Wales, brought to you by BP, Shell and Equinor. Though it does not look dramatic, the fire has been out of control for days - for a very particular reason. 🧵

Built during the Neolithic period the ‘Sweet track’ located within the Somerset levels dates back to 3806 BC

A past visit during the winter with less overgrowth, it is a spectacular sight to see

This #InternationalBogDay we’re showing the love for our peatland bogs!

They support some of the UK's most unique plants, lock away vast amounts of carbon, help reduce flood risk by absorbing rainfall and even act as a natural filter for our water.
