Diesel inventories near 20-year low.

“.. The decline is all the more striking because inventories are usually growing at this time of year. .. The $5.60 price of diesel at the end of August was 62% higher than its $3.50 price in early January.”

Just remember *most* of this is about the SPR. Commercial inventories are low versus recent history but not longer-term. Markets are *much* more sensitive to commercial inventories than SPR.

BTW, SPR releases are about one-fifth (maybe less) impt to total demand than Chinese crude import declines.

For a second there I was worried the Secretary of Defense might be expected to know something about our weapons stockpiles... You either have depleted inventories that will take years to replenish or you don’t. “Years” isn’t a rounding error.

But imports that are brought in to the US are also counted in other GDP measures. They either sit there, which means inventories rise. Inventories are a subset of investment. Or maybe they get used as part of corporate capex (also a part of investment). Finally they can be sold to consumers (C).

Tyson is shutting down its Lexington, Nebraska plant in January 2026. That’s 3,200 workers gone in one shot, the largest plant shutdown in company history.

Blame Trump’s tariff chaos and the lowest cattle inventories in decades. Tariffs jack up costs. Supply shrinks. Plants close. Towns hollow out.
