#Iodine/Iodide
dairy is one of the biggest sources of iodide in the american diet, not because milk naturally is high in iodide...

... but because iodine is still widely used as a disinfectant in the dairy industry
Tell me a fun fact.

1/The addition of iodide to table salt is one of the earliest and most successful public health interventions in the United States. It emerged from efforts to combat endemic goiter, a condition caused by iodine deficiency that leads to the enlargement of the thyroid gland.

I love the fine print about iodine (should say iodide though)

4/In the 1910s, researchers began to link iodine deficiency to goiter more conclusively:
David Marine, a Cleveland physician, conducted a large-scale study in Akron, Ohio (1917–1922), where he gave schoolgirls iodine supplements (sodium iodide).

Iodized salt: Celebrating the centennial of a major US public health triumph
Just over a century ago, much of the U.S. population experienced disfiguring and debilitating disorders related to iodine deficiency. In 2024, we celebrate 100 years of salt iodization — a treme...

The "slow reaction" consumes iodine & produces iodate, while the "fast reaction" produces iodine, but can only occur at high levels of iodate.

You slowly accumulate the trigger for a fast reaction to occur, which resets the slow reaction to its initial state.

Hence, oscillation.

The latest Daily Mail attack on veganism.🙄 The claim is linked to iodine, and is completely ridiculous as many plant milks are now fortified with iodine (often listed as potassium iodide).

Remember, folks:

Henry Kissinger advised the United States to use lead iodide to seed clouds over Vietnam

lead iodide, dispersed, converts quickly into elemental iodine and finely powdered metallic lead

Fun fact: You can get free iodine tablets from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission if you live within a certain radius of a nuclear plant.

Iodine (potassium iodide, KI) is helpful after nuclear radiation exposure!! www.who.int/news-room/qu...
Use of potassium iodide for thyroid protection during nuclear or radiological emergencies
During a nuclear accident, radioactive iodine may be released to the environment in a plume or cloud and subsequently contaminate soil, surfaces, food and water.

We are comparing the diffusion speeds of halogens along damp starch/iodide paper. This activity is conducted in Petri dishes on the bench. The final section shows iodine result and uses 1 tiny ball of iodine.

It's fine as it is, iodide is only useful as a source of iodine.

Iodine's role in thyroid cancer has reshaped treatment in 20+ years. Tumours concentrate ¹³¹I. Molecular research advances! PMID:42315928, Nat Rev Endocrinol 2026, @NatureRevEndo https://doi.org/10.1038/s41574-026-01271-8 #Medsky #Pharmsky #RNA #ASHG #ESHG 🧪
From bench to bedside: the evolving role of iodine in thyroid cancer management | Nature Reviews Endocrinology
Iodine metabolism has a central role in thyroid physiology and thyroid cancer biology, shaping both tumour behaviour and therapeutic strategies. Within the past 20 years, advancements in molecular research and targeted therapies have transformed the understanding of iodine metabolism in thyroid cancer and subsequently changed clinical management. In differentiated thyroid carcinomas, the ability of tumour cells to concentrate iodide provides the biological foundation of radioactive iodine treatment. However, loss of iodide-handling machinery function drives refractoriness in advanced disease, posing a major clinical challenge. Molecular genetics has now been integrated into routine clinical practice and genetically guided strategies to restore iodine uptake in previously non-avid lesions have emerged. This Review synthesizes these breakthroughs across molecular science, pathology, physics and clinical practice. We describe emerging predictive markers of radioiodine-refractory disease a

Iodine/Iodide Bromine/Bromide Chlorine/Chloride Fluorine/Fluoride. Can we please keep our halogens and anionic salt ions straight, please? Some of us have Chemistry degrees and conflating the two chemically causes real psychic pain for us.

Fish has less iodide than kelp or milk anyway.

Milk has it because iodine is used to clean milking equipment.

Atomically resolved edges and defects in lead halide perovskites - Nature
A majority methylammonium and iodine edge termination is observed by electron ptychography in the perovskite methylammonium lead iodide, and the stability of its edges and internal defects depends on the concentration and type of vacancies present.

⚠️ Potassium iodide pills AREN'T “anti-radiation” pills.

They only help protect your thyroid from radioactive iodine — & nothing else.

They DON'T shield other organs, protect against other isotopes, or stop external radiation.

Don't be gaslit — stay informed: bit.ly/4kcfZZF

if you're thinking radiation, it's potassium iodide you want, not regular iodine. if you're thinking water purification, it's regular iodine.

One dangerous one I heard of recently is those weirdo health influencers making ingredients like Potassium Iodide sound scary. When that was put into salt ON PURPOSE to cure Goiters and Cretinism due iodine deficiency.

It's just a guess, but potassium iodide can release small amounts of iodine over time, and iodine reacts very vigorously with aluminum.

Potassium iodide can help protect the thyroid gland from radiation exposure caused by a nuclear emergency. In a nuclear emergency, radioactive iodine may be released into the air... which can increase the risk of thyroid problems & cancer. (only use it during an emergency, not as a daily supplement)

eBay has iodine supplements including Potassium Iodide pills meant to be taken to minimize radioactive iodine from being absorbed in the event of a radiation release.
