#JOLTS
My take on today's JOLTS report - good news that exaggerates the small but genuine recovery in hiring.

Need someone to write a thread about how JOLTS changed the midterms.
Because unemployment and shadow unemployment have declined this year, the actual improvement in the job seeking environment may be slightly better than the tiny increase in hiring indicates - less congestion
2/ Hiring has increased by 1.7% this year relative to H2-2025; quits have increased by 1.6%; and layoffs have decreased by 2.3%.

If the labor market keeps improving, I'd expect both hiring and quits to inch up further *even at current net employment growth*

For anyone who is interested, my JOLTS preview.

Hiring has improved a little this year, but there's no sign of an acceleration

Not now, JOLTS! We’re busy.
Job openings, hires, quits all up in September. Layoffs down slightly. Still no sign of cracking in the labor market, and perhaps some hints of a pickup. #JOLTS #NumbersDay

NEW: US labor market flows remained sluggish in September data released this morning, the last federal economic data released before today's election

The hiring rate rose to 3.4%, layoffs fell to 1.0%, quits rose to 2.1%, and job openings rose to 4.5%

Big JOLTS for Sept ... Quits also surged to the highest since March 2025... third largest percentage change since 2020

Sun's down, been down a while. They're pushing him along with strong jolts of electricity at this point.

JOLTS: "The number of job openings was little changed at 7.5 million in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics reported today." www.bls.gov/news.release...

Hiring, however, remains weak in white collar sectors, though the JOLTS data isn't granular enough to really know whether any of this is related to AI.

The data we're all waiting for today: an upbeat JOLTS report (September data!)

1/ Hiring was the strongest since June; quits were the strongest since June *2025*; layoffs were very low.

Still, the improvement this year has been very small.

"Just one more thing. You see, sir, it's an airtight alibi. I'm no expert with Minecraft servers and such but the boys in the lab told me these sorts of lag spikes happen sometimes. Except there's one thing that's been bothering me. You forgot about the hunger jolts."

(don't try this at home (seriously) (it feels bad and also if your arm jolts or something you could bonk yourself))

The rate of job openings in Sep 2026 came in at 4.5%, up from 4.3% in Aug 2026. JOLTS defines Job Openings as all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month. #jolts #econsky

Little changed in the #JOLTS report for September. Some very small movements in a positive direction:
- job openings ticked up
- hire rate increased a tad
- quits rate showed a promising uptick
- layoffs dropped a bit

Labor market holds steady while new entrants still have a hard time breaking in.
