Quick charts: Openings have stabilized and maybe show hints of rising. Ditto quits. No real sign of a rebound in hiring, but no longer falling. Layoffs still hanging out at historically low levels. #NumbersDay

Job openings, hires, quits all up in September. Layoffs down slightly. Still no sign of cracking in the labor market, and perhaps some hints of a pickup. #JOLTS #NumbersDay

While hires and quits remain low so do layoffs. Layoffs ticked down in September and remain one of the more promising indicators in the entire report. That said, if layoffs begin to rise, the unemployment rate could spike if hires remain as depressed as they are today.

New labor market measure just dropped @bradhershbein.bsky.social @upjohninstitute.bsky.social

The New Separation Quality Index (NHQI) tracks real earning power of newly separated workers.

Its rise => separations (quits & firings) increasingly affect higher earning workers.

Workers have seen zero progress on affordability compared to January 2025. Real wages are essentially stagnant as workers leverage has declined and prices have risen. It's no wonder workers feel left behind in the current economy.

One of the dominant narratives about the labor market over the past couple years has been that it's a "good time to have a job but a bad time to be looking for one."
I think that's only half true. A quick 📈🧵:

Bottom line: +29k jobs (+50k 3mma) and 4.2% unemployment are hardly catastrophic. Rebound in prime-age e-pop is encouraging.
Fundamental issue in this labor market isn't that there aren't enough jobs. It's what they pay: Wage growth is continuing to slow. #NumbersDay
