Jevons paradox on the roof
Conventional wisdom says rooftop solar meets **exisiting** electricity demand.

What if rooftop solar actually **increases** electricity demand, improving living standards and driving economic growth?

This is exactly what our new analysis of Pakistan's solar boom shows. Let's dig in.. 🧵

Jevons' Paradox, eat your heart out
Solar just produced more electricity than coal in the US for the first month ever

and it won't be the last...

Over the last two decades, the role of coal and solar in the US mix has changed drastically

a lotta yall still dont get it

Jevons holders can use multiple paradoxes on a single Jevon

so if you have 1 Jevon and 3 paradoxes you can create 3 new Jevons
As somebody informed me, it’s actually The Jevons Paradox, not Jevon’s Pqradox. There is actually a swarm of Jevons is why. The work like a hive mind so a single Jevon is meaningless

Stocks are up cause of Jevons Paradox. As soon as they went down in price, everyone could afford to buy more of them.

So there's been a lot of talk in AI circles about Jevons Paradox and @hankgreen.bsky.social has one of the best explainers of it I've seen (including that it's not a paradox), but I want to add something to it.

Towards the end of the video, Hank says...

this statement:

“{OpenAI|Anthropic} released cheaper model X because they are short on compute”

does not make sense if you believe in the Jevons Paradox

>The Jevons paradox (pronounced /ˈdʒɛ.vənz/, JEV-ənz) or Jevons effect is an economic phenomenon said to occur when technological improvements that increase the efficiency of a resource's use lead to a rise, rather than a fall, in total consumption of that resource.

People think getting an electric bike means you get less of a workout but they don't understand the Jevons paradox.
This is how I feel about my electric bike. I just biked from the Ferry building to the Sutro Baths with my 4 year old and my understanding of SF's layout has grown immensely.
