In this case, he’s not only confusing gender with sex, but conflating phenotype with karyotype. Being precise is important right now, as missteps allow the right to do what should be rhetorically impossible for a group that’s typically averse to it— appearing more scientifically minded.
But I also want to caution those who seek to be allies that leaning into talking about intersex people to defend trans rights conflates the two, can end up being offensive in the process, and puts you in scientifically dubious waters in a way just saying “trans rights are human rights” does not.

One of the funnier TERF pretenses is when they insist they only feel desire based on sex defined via chromosomes. You only desire someone after looking at a printout of their karyotype? Really?
Now obviously there is one way to escape this, which is to say that there is an ineluctable womanly essence which exists even if a woman has a hysterectomy, or has her vulva and vagina mangled in a horrific accident, or turns out to have a karyotype that isn't 46,XX...

Friendly neighborhood geneticist here again! As someone who’s run literally THOUSANDS of human genetic samples, let me tell you one more time - there’s far more variability around XX or XY than most people will ever know. For most people, it never matters. Sex != gender, and karyotype != phenotype.

Karyotype tests were up until recently incredibly expensive to get done and therefore there was absolutely no reason to do so unless you had reason to believe there was some chromosomal abnormality (Kleinfelter's/infertility/weird development issues/etc.).
