#Kdramas/characters
Agreed! The characters are enjoyable. The violence is more intense than I am used to in kdramas, but not overly graphic.

I've been watching kdramas lately and picking up more words than I used to, undoubtedly because all my Japanese studying has improved my ear, and out of curiosity I looked at Hangul and it's sooooo much easier than Japanese which has THREE different sets of characters.

Flower of evil was so unbelievably good jesus. Lee joon-gi is seriously amazing at portraying unreadable yet intense, complicated characters. Top 3 kdramas of all time and one of my favorite straight women characters of all time

#KWomenHistoryMonth Day 14 🧵

#KoSungHee born June 21, 1990

Ko is known for her versatility in kdramas and films. She gained recognition for her elegant screen presence and for portraying complex characters across genres such as romance, thriller, and historical kdrama.

Do characters in #kdramas ever get alcohol poisoning? These duels by drinking competitively are insane😂😂😂

I love this prompt! If you're a man who watches kdramas, what are the romantic scenes and tropes you love the most?

It’s true, the defining features of kdramas are 1: it’s a love story, 2: the main characters are childhood friends but they may not remember it, and 3: someone is gonna come out of left field and attempt some murder
I’m pretty sure at least part of the reason @maxnichols.bsky.social watches kdramas with me is because he likes joking about what is otherwise a romantic comedy suddenly having a serial killer plot in it. The problem? He’s actually spot on with his joke like 40% of the time…

Day 6: Time Travel

#Signal
This version of the time travel plot has characters staying in their own timelines but able to communicate with someone from another era. One of the best explorations of this trope, and one of the best kdramas ever, period.

I identify actors like 75% based on their hair, which makes it challenge in kdramas where the characters usually have a slick professional style and a tousled casual style. What do you mean that’s the same person???

Clark Kent wouldn’t even need glasses, just a different hairstyle to fool me. 😭😂

Korean is great at this. That’s why in so many time-travel kdramas the historical characters do not understand the modern characters’ slang, leading to comedic misunderstandings. Someday I’ll understand enough Korean to catch all the wordplay jokes.
Ideas for making up words:

Borrow from another language!
Combine prefixes/suffixes!
Make it a new part of speech (verb a noun!)
Stack or smush words together!
Make a lil wordplay!
Acronym!
Shorten an existing word!
Use an old word newly!
Just throw together something that feels good!
@gretchenmcculloch.com do you have any good tips for Making Shit Up (in a linguistics way)

Not shy kdramas that haven't been mentioned

- #HerPrivateLife
- #WhatsWrongWithSecretaryKim
- #SheWouldNeverKnow
- #YumisCells (her inner village 😂)
- #LovestruckInTheCity (eventhough didn't enjoy the characters)
- #BeMelodramatic
- #Encounter (very cinematically sensual)

#ThePotatoLab continues to delight me with its band of merry, chaos-inducing characters. I love how they all feel very human with layers to their motivations and actions. The humour is ridiculous on a meta level and plays into its own ridiculousness, which I love.

Day 8~~
Stand out secondary character of 2024.
Kim Tae Sung. Listen, a lot of 2nd characters in kdramas make me cringe with them being unnecessarily clingy. But TaeSung?.... Man knew he messed up, respected Sol & kept his promise of keeping Sunjae safe.

In the past few years we've seen more Kdramas with LGBTQ+ characters in sympathetic or positive roles, and that's a big deal. Twelve years ago when I started watching it was rare to get a real kiss on screen. Now we have LGBTQ+ characters in sympathetic roles and surviving. It's a step forward.

Hasn’t Samsung had one for years?

I am not into new technology but I know many characters on my #KDramas have been sporting foldable phones forever

Every once in a while kdrama fans start a discourse about "kdramas are becoming too Westernised" (because characters had sex or something), not knowing they were already saying that a decade ago, it's a neverending cycle

I appreciate that @daebakpodcast.bsky.social went looking for actual Korean lesbians.

I went back to the lesbian characters I’ve seen in mainstream kdramas. None is as dapper as Do Hye-jung.

Spoilers ahead; some of these characters’ sexuality is a plot point.

And also: WHEE dialogue I can understand! It's always funny when characters speak Japanese on Kdramas because my brain always spends a second confused about why I understand Korean now. 😆

Likes: #kdramas (contemporary romcoms, thrillers), #cdramas (historical romance), BL, webtoons, cannibalism in fiction (been into Hannibal from 2006), omegaverse, critical thinking about media and fandom, yanderes, giving characters Daddy Issues, villains

Dislikes: I can't think of anything tbh

I finished #TheLadyInDignity. I really liked these two characters, played by Kim Sun-a and Kim Hee-sun. The costumes were fantastic. Like many murder mystery kdramas, the big reveal was a bit of a “so what?” 8/10.
