The lovely church of St Oswald, naming the village of Kirkoswald, with its unusual separate bell tower on the hill above. A church has stood on the site since the 7th century, the present building dating to 1523.

Kirkoswald Old Kirk - another with graves of people that inspired characters in Burns poems. And the font where Burns was baptised/christened. And a church ruin. And some lovely old trees.

Kirkoswald castle in Cumbria received a license from King John in 1210 to fortify the original structure. The Castle was later destroyed by Robert the Bruce in 1314, but was rebuilt and extended in the late 15th Century.
All that remains now is a tower some 60 feet high.

Kirkoswald castle in Cumbria received a license from King John in 1210 to fortify the original structure. The Castle was later destroyed by Robert the Bruce in 1314, but was rebuilt and extended in the late 15th Century.
All that remains now is a tower some 60 feet high.
