niche post & may make me a chump, but i prefer African salsa over Latin/Caribbean American styles from the 1960s/70s. This is a broad brush, but there’s often more subtlety to African salsa than those coming out of PR & NY, which tend to be more bombastic. Also, it’s usually more guitar-driven

The second kind of transition is more common, and that is the flashback. I like to use flashbacks, and my coauthor humors me. I prefer to start right in the thick of things, in medias res as the latin goes.
