A further 6.5% were unsure if they had these differences. The majority of aces (92.2%) did not report intersex characteristics.

The median age of first identifying with their sexual identity was 18 years old for ace respondents. The median age when ace respondents indicated that they first participated in an asexual community was 19 years old. In general, while some ace respondents began identifying with their sexual identity in early adolescence, the majority were in their late teens. A smaller number of aces also participated in an asexual community in their early teens; however, many of them began doing so in their late teens or early twenties.

When asked to describe their gender identity, over half of ace respondents selected “Woman or female” (53.1%), over a quarter identified as nonbinary (28.6%), and around one in six identified as agender (17.0%), “Man or male” (16.1%), or genderqueer (13.0%). Other gender identities selected by aces included genderfluid (8.5%), demigirl (5.7%), androgynous (5.5%), demiboy (2.9%), bigender (1.4%), or neutrois (1.3%). Among aces, 15.4% were questioning or unsure of their gender, 6.5% selected “No gender,” 0.3% selected “None of the above,” and 5.5% provided another write-in response.

The next most commonly selected countries were the United Kingdom (8.7%), Germany (7.7%), Canada (6.1%), Australia (3.1%), Brazil (2.7%), and Italy (2.0%). Aces also responded from the Netherlands (1.9%), France (1.7%), Spain (1.7%), Poland (1.6%), Russia (1.3%), and other countries (15.0%).

Over a third of aces indicated that they often (2.8%), sometimes (9.3%), or rarely (24.7%) wished to act on their sexual attraction or desire by pursuing a sexual relationship or experience. A quarter of aces (25.2%) indicated that they never wished to act on their desire, and another third (33.9%) stated that the question was not applicable. Only 4.1% of aces were unsure if they wanted to do so. Among those who were unsure if they were ace, one out of ten (9.8%) stated that they often wished to act on their attraction or desire, while a quarter (27.3%) sometimes did, and a third (31.8%) rarely did. One out of six (16.1%) participants who were unsure if they were ace indicated that they never wished to act on it. Nine out of ten non-ace participants indicated that they often (43.1%), sometimes (35.2%), or rarely (11.9%) wished to act on their attraction or desire. Of non-ace participants, 4.7% indicated that they did not wish to act on that, and only 2.8% were unsure. Among participants who specifically indicated that they were asexual, almost half (46.4%) indicated that they felt the question was not applicable and nearly a third (29.0%) stated they did not wish to act on any attraction or desire. Around one in five asexual participants indicated that they often (0.9%), sometimes (3.5%), or rarely (16.4%) wished to act on that. Among participants who identified as demisexual, the percentages were similar to those who were unsure if they were ace, with the majority (42.6%) indicating that they rarely wished to act on their sexual attraction or desire, followed by those who sometimes (29.8%) or often (12.7%) did. This trend was also similar among graysexual participants, where nearly half (49.4%) rarely wished to act on their attraction or desire, followed by those who sometimes (21.6%) did. One in six (16.8%) graysexual participants indicated that they never wanted to act on their attraction or desire.

In the 2024 Survey, respondents were asked if they have read or watched aro-related content or posted or commented in an aro or aromantic spectrum community in the past year, and the most popular platform among all aces was Tumblr (33.9%), followed by YouTube (31.6%), Instagram (28.2%), Discord (22.8%), and Reddit (22.7%). The order of the popularity of the platforms was the same among aro aces, with over two-fifths choosing Tumblr (43.3%), followed by YouTube (40.2%), Instagram (32.2%), Discord (30.0%), Reddit (29.0%), and fanfic websites (29.0%). Among aces unsure if they were aro, the ranking of the top five popular platforms differed slightly: Tumblr still ranked the highest (28.8%), but this was followed by Instagram (28.0%), YouTube (26.6%), fanfic websites (19.6%), and Reddit (18.0%). Among non-aro aces, the most popular platform where they read or watched aro-related content or posted or commented in an aro or aromantic spectrum community in the past year was Instagram (20.5%), followed by Tumblr (18.1%), YouTube (17.5%), Reddit (12.9%), and Discord (11.9%). Of the three subgroups (aro aces, aces unsure if aro, and non-aro aces), 39.7% of non-aro aces, 20.5% of aces unsure if aro, and 8.0% of aro aces selected N/A as their response.

When asked where survey respondents first heard about asexuality and/or the ace spectrum, the most common response among ace respondents and respondents unsure if they were ace was “I don’t remember” (18.7% and 25.7%, respectively). Among ace respondents who remembered where they first heard of asexuality and/or the ace spectrum, Tumblr was the most common platform (15.4%), followed by friends or family (12.9%) and internet searching (11.6%). Among respondents who were unsure if they were ace, the top three locations were Tumblr (15.2%), friends or family (11.8%), and the LGBTQIA+ community (7.7%). The most commonly reported source where non-ace respondents first heard of asexuality and/or the ace spectrum was friends or family (19.5%), followed by Tumblr (18.1%), which ranked as the second most common response among all ace, unsure if ace, and non-ace respondents. The third most common response among non-ace respondents was “I don’t remember” (17.6%), which was the most common response among ace and unsure if ace respondents.

When asked about employment status, over one in three ace respondents indicated that they were full time students (38.1%), constituting the largest proportion of respondents. The next largest group was those who were employed and working full time (29.4%), followed by those who were employed and working part time (18.0%). Nearly two in three aces (60.9%) were employed in some capacity, and approximately one in five were unemployed due to various reasons (21.8%).

When asked whether they identified as nonbinary or considered themselves to be part of the nonbinary umbrella, a third of ace respondents (34.4%) indicated yes, while 15.9% were unsure if they did. Almost half of ace respondents (49.6%) did not identify as nonbinary. When asked about words used to describe their gender identity, over three out of four (78.2%) nonbinary aces described themselves as nonbinary. Nearly two out of five (38.3%) identified as agender, about a third (30.6%) identified as genderqueer, and one in five (20.5%) identified as genderfluid. Among nonbinary aces, 17.2% identified as “Woman or female” and 11.1% identified as “Man or male,” while 9.9% identified as a demigirl and 6.9% identified as a demiboy. Additionally, 11.1% identified as androgynous, 3.4% identified as neutrois and 3.3% identified as bigender. One in seven nonbinary aces specified “No gender” (14.8%) or were questioning or unsure of their identity (14.1%), while 0.4% indicated none of the options above, and 10.9% wrote in a different option.

Almost a quarter (23.0%) of ace respondents were out to all their ex-partners, and 45.5% had not disclosed their ace identity at all to their ex-partners. 29.9% of ace respondents were out to all people in their household, while 22.9% were out to all their parents. Few ace respondents (5.2%) were out to all other family members. The majority of ace respondents were out to either all (45.5%), most (28.4%), or few (17.4%) of their LGBTQIA+ friends. Slightly more than three quarters (78.5%) of ace respondents were also out to at least a few of their non-LGBTQIA+ friends. Ace respondents were rarely out to counselors (17.9% to all, 62.4% to none) teachers and school staff (2.4% to all, 81.6% to none), coworkers (3.8% to all, 69.5% to none), and medical professionals (6.6% to all, 68.9% to none).

Only 2.0% of respondents answered “Unsure.” Taking a deeper look among the ace subgroups, 60.7% of demisexual respondents had engaged in consensual sex, while 65.5% of asexual respondents had never done so. Nearly half of ace respondents (47.3%) indicated that they had engaged in consensual sexual activity that they would have declined had they known about options or identities available to them. Over a third (35.9%) did not. Only 16.8% answered “Unsure.”
