often it’s POV of character, are they running away or towards, are they trying to escape or solve, etc. etc. If you google, there’s great writing on this from Ebert, and ?think?@manohladargis.bsky.social wrote a definition of thrillers that clicked for me ages ago. A friend who was the ad director at the LAWeekly once got into an argument (late '80s) with the editor over the value of advertising to readers. The publisher had to set his editor straight by informing him that a recent survey of readers showed that 80% of readers read the paper for the ads.
