Yes, just as metrics or key performance indicators get weaponised against time poor staff, expected to do more with less. We then wonder why the sector is so unhappy and this is transferring to the students. A wellbeing initiative won't cut it. #LTHEChat

In the days when the #HE community used Twitter, we used to use Storify to pull together Tweets from events, curate them and publish them as stories. Does anyone know of an equivalent tool for BlueSky? I've done some searching but can't find anything comparable and simple to use. #LTHEchat

A6

Stop: grading

Start: reviewing feedback across assignments with students to help identify patterns and growth

Keep doing: using non written approaches and games based approaches to show identity growth and encourage engagement

A5 sense checking, understanding linkages of "wicked" problems and critical thinking. Today we experienced a system wide "down" of our computer system. How would we respond if that went on longer?

A4 asking students not to write but try a different method for assignments.

If scaffolded with choice, guidance, building over time and lower stakes then this provides a safety net. #lthechat

A3 Not so much everyday but a constraint perhaps. I'd like to add an extra session to explore an issue in more detail or a creative way, eg taking out for a walk to discuss. But not able to as students are staff with busy timetables and if it wasn't planned initially, hard to add #lthechat
October 15, 2026 at 4:44 PM
A2 I would think this means students are not complaining (measurement?) (reverse of happiness?) through * clear communications, understanding/* acknowledgement of wider issues that may impact participation
* accessible resources and approaches that support learning. #lthechat

I’ve had a phenomenally productive and interesting day with Carol Moxam working on our student feedback literacy toolkit project. We’ve already gathered rich data from our students regarding their use of formative and summative feedback.

Yes, to an extent - but we need to see impact and improvement from reflection, not just reflection itself. A promotion case that reflects on areas for development flagged in student feedback is only partway there: it needs to be resubmitted once that reflection has led to positive change. #LTHEchat
October 15, 2026 at 12:24 PM
That's a fair distinction, Gary. I wouldn't want to lose the student voice from promotion either. I'd be more interested in how a colleague understood and acted on feedback than their average score. Could that be the evidence we reward? #LTHEchat
October 15, 2026 at 12:18 PM
That sounds really useful, Abbi. I'd be interested in what you've changed as a result. Perhaps our feedback deadlines should be worked backwards from when students next need it, rather than forwards from when they submitted the last piece? #LTHEchat
October 15, 2026 at 12:17 PM
That's a fair challenge, especially on unequal access. Being able to question an answer assumes quite a lot of knowledge already. I'd put the burden on us to show what AI adds to the learning, rather than on students to justify doing without it. #LTHEchat
October 15, 2026 at 12:16 PM
Yes, Giles. I'd want that triangulation to be something we do with colleagues, not another defence they have to assemble on their own. How we respond to the first difficult comment probably says more about the culture than any reassurance we give beforehand. #LTHEchat
October 15, 2026 at 12:15 PM
Both! There goes my carefully constructed distinction, Sandra! Thank you for joining in. I'm glad the conversation has carried on today; the replies have given me plenty to think about too. #LTHEchat
October 15, 2026 at 12:14 PM
Exactly that, Sandra. Manageable challenge is hugely motivational. The problem with the module before was that it was dry and boring and so students weren't motivated to engage with it. I'm a huge believer that students live up or down to what they perceive your expectations of them to be #LTHEchat
October 15, 2026 at 11:55 AM
Completely agree. They are a very blunt tool, but too often used as if they are powerful! Should only ever be part of the evaluative mix, and never used as a substitute for actually talking to students! #LTHEchat
October 15, 2026 at 11:51 AM
Interesting. Not sure this is quite my experience, though. As a junior staff member, you can take risks - fewer eyes are on you outside probation and promotion meetings. But if you want to innovate, you must build your own evidence to demonstrate impact and counter institutional metrics. #LTHEchat
October 15, 2026 at 11:49 AM
Great challenge, Doug. I do try to use evaluations to support staff rather than judge them. But it's context dependent, I think. For example, in a promotions round, I think it's right to take account of students' feedback - but only if we ask the right questions to solicit that feedback #LTHEchat
