Mining magnate Clive Palmer has dismissed the dropping of a charge alleging he breached takeover laws as a 'political witch hunt', following a near-decade-long legal battle. The charge, which related to a proposed buyout of timeshare investors at the former Hyatt Regency Coolum golf resort on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, was dropped by prosecutors after Palmer Leisure Coolum pleaded guilty in June and was fined $10,000 on October 27. The case stemmed from an alleged failure to make an offer for securities within the required two-month period in 2018, as reported by the corporate watchdog. Palmer and his company had sought to have the charges permanently stayed in 2018, but when that was unsuccessful, they took the case to the High Court in 2020, which declined to intervene. Palmer remains involved in a separate legal dispute with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), which has alleged fraud over a $12 million transfer between his companies, Mineralogy and the now-defunct Palmer United Party. The commission claims Palmer illegally authorised the transfer in 2013 to fund his party's federal election campaign. Palmer has argued that the case breaches his human rights and that he is being charged for his political beliefs. The case has been adjourned, with ASIC and the Commonwealth prosecutor yet to comment. The dropped charge against Palmer follows a series of legal challenges involving the mining magnate, who has been a prominent figure in Australian politics and business for many years.

The Trump White House has once again excluded CNN from the official press pool for a presidential trip, escalating tensions with the network as a legal deadline approaches. According to CNN chief media analyst Brian Stelter, the White House press office omitted CNN from the list of media outlets permitted to travel with President Trump on his upcoming trip to South Carolina. This exclusion comes just two days after CNN attorney Ted Boutrous warned the Justice Department that further legal action would follow if the network continued to be barred from Air Force One coverage. Stelter reported that today was CNN's scheduled turn to provide both in-town and out-of-town television coverage, but the White House left the network off the press pool list, resulting in no pooled TV coverage of the trip. Boutrous, representing CNN, MS NOW, and Politico in their First Amendment lawsuit against the White House, gave the administration until Thursday at 5 p.m. Eastern time to address the issue or face additional judicial action. The latest incident is part of an ongoing dispute between the White House and major media outlets over press access restrictions. The administration's repeated exclusion of CNN from press pool coverage has drawn criticism from media advocates who argue that such actions violate the First Amendment. The legal battle centers on whether the White House can restrict media access to presidential travel without violating constitutional protections for press freedom. CNN's legal team has been proactive in challenging these restrictions, emphasizing that the network's exclusion is not merely procedural but a deliberate attempt to limit coverage. The situation has intensified as the White House faces mounting pressure to comply with media access requirements. With the Thursday deadline approaching, the administration must decide whether to revise its policies or risk further legal consequences. This incident highlights the growing friction between the Trump administration and the press, particularly regarding the handling of media access during presidential travel. The outcome of this legal dispute could set a precedent for how future administrations interact with the press during official trips. For now, the White House has maintained its position, leaving CNN and other media organizations to navigate the legal landscape while attempting to cover presidential activities. The ongoing conflict underscores the importance of press freedom in democratic governance and the challenges faced by media outlets in securing fair access to government officials.

Ben Roberts-Smith, a former Australian soldier accused of war crimes in Afghanistan, has embarked on a media campaign to promote his new clothing line while out on bail facing five murder charges related to his military service. The media blitz includes interviews with 2GB and news.com.au, where he denied the allegations. The 2GB interview, hosted by Ben Fordham, was live-blogged by Nine papers' reporters who fact-checked his claims and critiqued the interview's lack of rigor. The coverage highlighted concerns about the media's role in amplifying Roberts-Smith's narrative without sufficient scrutiny. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has issued a subtle warning to the press following an attack on journalist Helen Haines. The article notes Roberts-Smith's ongoing legal battle, his denial of the charges, and the media's role in covering his case. The coverage also references previous media attention on Roberts-Smith, including leaked tapes and rival outlet coverage. The article is published by Crikey, an Australian independent news source, and is part of their 'The Snoop' section focusing on media and politics. The piece emphasizes the tension between media freedom and responsible reporting, particularly in high-profile cases involving legal proceedings.

Ben Roberts-Smith, a former soldier accused of war crimes, has launched a clothing brand called Epic 1 Two, featuring T-shirts priced at $49 and an $85 'underdog hoodie'. The brand, named after his military callsign, was introduced as he seeks to generate income for his family during a costly legal dispute. Roberts-Smith told news.com.au that the venture aims to provide financial support amid ongoing legal challenges. The Spirit of Australia T-shirt, described as 'a nod to the day that awoke the silent majority of our nation,' is part of the collection. The news comes amid backlash over the Walkleys, Australia's premier journalism awards, which have faced criticism for their handling of certain issues. The article also references the late-to-file life of DFAT's 'Mr Inside,' suggesting broader media and political scrutiny. Crikey, the publication, emphasizes its commitment to independent journalism, highlighting its ad-free, paywall-free model.
