Text: Chapter 6, page 97 That’s my rough working synthesis of the two main positions in a longrunning internal debate among humanists about the value of the humanities. One side sees the principal value of the humanities in teaching lessons about how to live; the other sees that principal value in the acquisition of equipment for living in the form of analytical skills, often described as “critical thinking.” Though it’s been going on for centuries, it’s actually not a very compelling debate, since there’s an obvious “both/and, not either/or” solution to the problem it purports to address—just like the contrived standoff between Tastes great! and Less filling! in old Miller Lite ads. If you’re looking for lessons in how to live, you have to work on your interpretive chops so that you can get meaning out of all kinds of texts in which those lessons might be found. If you’re looking for lessons in chopsmanship, then you need some kind of application to the problem of how to live to impart the necessary urgency of a meaningful answer to the So what? question. As I taught it in spring 2020, Lit Core was designed around twin objectives that replicated in miniature this symbiotic relationship between the two principles: discerning how meaning flows through language (developing analytical skills) as we explore what happens to social misfits (considering problems in how to live).* Footnote: * On the long-running debate about the purpose and value of the humanities, see Eric Adler, The Battle of the Classics: How a Nineteenth-Century Debate Can Save the Humanities Today (New York: Oxford University Press, 2020); and Paul Reitter and Chad Wellmon, Permanent Crisis: The Humanities in a Disenchanted Age (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2021). Finally read this and FWIW I'm not AS negative about #business training as most. I took a fair number of #business classes in grad school. I have a lot of awesome, incredibly empathetic #doctor friends who have either BBAs or MBAs.
I think as others have pointed out, need #liberalarts taught with it

Yes there are major downsides to the U.S. #highered model, particularly the cost for #healthcare education. But there are solutions for the government to subsidize #medical education to make it accessible while also keeping the well rounded #liberalarts education.
