One of Mozart's librettists - Lorenzo Da Ponte - was friends with Clement Clark Moore, who wrote The Night Before Christmas.

I think if they are not pop lyricists they are librettists, or y’know, Robert Lopez or Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Opera productions are really weird and inconsistent about crediting librettists, I kinda feel like they are equally as important as the composer but they're often weirdly de-emphasized or even erased

My mistake, not *everyone* is mentioned before Missy. The librettists, one of whom is a Pulitzer winner for Du Yun's Angel's Bone, are also relegated to graf 6.

A student contacted me about a music theory thing re: Harald Krebs's work on meter, & it it seems entirely possible that the man has never actually heard a poet read their own work, or been privy to the kinds of discussions poets/lyricists/librettists have with composers.

Issues the doc addresses: crediting librettists; handling revisions during the composing process; collaboration; fees. Campbell believes composers should have higher fees than librettists. (I do not, fwiw.)

Tomorrow is my Pamina debut in a local production of The Magic Flute, and with spooky season fast approaching I thought I'd recommend some particularly haunted operas. With an emphasis on Jewish and LGBTQ+ composers & librettists, these five Gothic operas 👻 are among my favorites in the repertoire!
