grindset? Get on that LINEset
Youtuber: Here's how Stephen King wrote so much in his early career. Habit. Discipline of writing every day. Following his passion. That's the secret sauce to productivity.

Stephen King: It was cocaine. Also alcohol, but mainly cocaine. There's an entire book I don't even remember writing.

In case one of your limitations is the lineset or external unit for a heat pump: we have both a window mount heat pump and a wall pass through package unit that work fine for one room each

A new hire did this at a company my friend works at and when they asked him to fix it he quit

Theory: major determinant of heat pump install cost is length of lineset. Lowest cost are packaged units with ~0 length (window a/c’s, PTHPs), highest are minisplits with rooftop condenser arrays, intermediate are Euro/Asian-style balcony- or facade-mounted splits. Thoughts? @shreyassudhakar.com

It is certainly more elegant to put the condensing units on the roof, but adding lineset shafts down through an existing building is so disruptive that it would only really be feasible as part of a complete rehab of a building.

I've been advised by minitsplit installers that length of lineset run doesn't matter that much, but stuff like routing lineset through interior spaces, and arranging for drainage (either pitched to exterior or pumped) does.

Also running power to condensing unit, and whether you need a crane.

Specifically the fire-rated shaft req kicks in when the lineset between indoor & outdoor units penetrates >2 floors. In Europe you penetrate zero because OU is on the facade/balcony; in NYC, the lineset must penetrate many floors because OU generally must be on the roof. bsky.app/profile/step...
Codes are banning the old high-GWP refrigerants (this is good and global best practice), but the new lower-GWP refrigerants are more flammable and the codes are overestimating their risk and requiring expensive mitigation for this. So designers try to avoid it by just doing packaged units.

We were looking at some heatpump lineset penetration sealing options and this rectorsesl cover looks suspiciously elephant like.

When is the Rectorseal x Elephant Energy collab happening? @elephantenergy.bsky.social

Compared to a conventional mini-split installed by a contractor (usually $5-8k all in), the DIY Airspool unit is much cheaper, but also requires no refrigerant work! The lineset comes pre-charged with the correct mass of refrigerant - a step that contractors sometimes mess up, hurting performance.

These would be amazing for sash windows too, if you don't want a window unit permanently blocking your window.

Just put a big pool noodle next to the lineset to fill the gap and close the window.
July 2, 2026 at 5:53 PM
Presumably there is also a cliff between prefilled lineset and not?
December 5, 2025 at 4:05 PM
IMO there's a big cliff between "no lineset" and "some lineset": you need special skills to deal with refrigerants which are risky to leak and require purging beforehand.

MrCool I think is a neat idea to avoid that but there's just such a huge downside in case of failure.

First snag in furnace replacement.
Line set to the outside ac unit is completely smashed. The entire lineset has to be replaced thus walls need to be opened up.
Wheeee!

All done: working and hooked up to WiFi and all. Ugly exposed lineset since his distributor jacked up prices on lineset covers (tariffs?). I can paint it blue later if I feel like it and it’s not like this wall doesn’t already have a million things going on.
May 5, 2025 at 10:34 PM
That's what boggles my mind about this. It is still connecting an indoor unit to an outdoor unit with a refrigerant lineset.

The only added complication to the physical work is a wire you run along the line set to power and control the indoor head. Otherwise it's the same damn thing.

First off... your set point is 63? I do not want to see your July power bill.

Second...
I'm assuming there was no frost on the lineset when you hosed the condenser off?

Condenser blowing cold tells me the compressor isn't running. Probably a failed capacitor.

How old is the unit?

It’s also a compete disaster if the lineset somehow gets perforated, and the North American style of construction – with a lot of light-weight structural materials, interior partitions, and insulation – means this is more likely than abroad.

The stomach part would also stretch it is made of a lineset (if that's what it's called) and When they show their teeth the torso will fold back and it will just hang down #murderdrones

November 5, 2024 at 12:10 PM
Yeah but all of these things are highly correlated with lineset length
December 5, 2025 at 2:54 PM
Lineset!
January 1, 2025 at 10:31 PM
It’s a good zeroth order estimation! Not always true though, I can have a straight 60ft line run in an open basement that takes 1 hr to route vs a snaking 15 foot that goes through studs and behind drywall that takes 4 hrs. But at a high level, a project with more lineset is probably more complex
December 5, 2025 at 2:49 PM
There's nothing very different about them, they're just packaged more compactly.

It's still just a compressor, two heat exchangers, a metering device, and lineset. The only big difference with a single-heat system is the metering device may be an EEV and there will be some extra circuit boards.

I was able to get a quote pretty easily for a heat pump, but nobody read the spec sheet of the heat pump that was quoted. They had a Mitsubishi unit in my condo and my old gas heater removed before realizing that the vertical run of my lineset was too long for the unit.
