#Livonians
Fun fact: when Russia first attacked Livonia during the Livonian War it was actually welcomed by the inhabitants, because Latvians, Estonians and Livonians hated the Baltic Germans /that much./

Then they started raping.
Like I’m Swedish but don’t think Sweden had any real right to rule over Estonia and (parts of) Latvia. That we were perhaps marginally better imperial overlords than the Russians is a very low bar to clear.

It's a bit like how around this same time a lot of Estonians, Livonians and Latvians actually broadly welcomed the invading Russian army because the Livonian Order were just that bad.

This literally dates back to Ivan the Terrible btw. Allegedly, according to some sources, the Latvians, Livonians and Estonians were initially /delighted/ when he invaded Livonia because they thought the end of the German yoke was nigh. Then they started killing fucking everybody, for no reason.

Like it cannot be stressed enough that what the rule of the Livonian Order was like was that Latvians, Estonians, Livonians and the other peoples, living and extinct, of that land were denied legal rights (to land, inheritance, etc) because they were "still" "only" "novitiates" in Christianity.

The Livonians were a Finnic people like we are. They inhabited the coast of this gulf for millennia but are now sadly as good as extinct.

Here's a map of Baltic peoples c. 1200 AD with the Livonians (liivlased) also indicated.

Re the Baltics and the Teutonics/Livonians
Effectively, they were kept in a state of centuries-long PARTIAL conversion, in order to deny them the rights that full Christians enjoyed. Apartheid!

My mother and her family are indigenous Livonians displaced during WWII who were refugees in the UK for a while. My father is Welsh (which, if you ask me, is also an indigenous ethnic group, but that's probably more controversial).

Here's me in my Livonian gūngaserk and jūost.

Most Livonians don't like socialism. They do like a recreation center/gym half paid for by taxes. Thanks, neighbors. :-)

8. Livonian
The edgy trouble child nestled on the Courland peninsula in Latvia, Livonians were gutted by the Soviets and went extinct in 2013.
Yet, this very particular Finno-Ugric language is undergoing intense revitalization. There's even a family in Helsinki who speak only Livonian to their kid!

Not Finland. You are confusing the Finnic language group (members all called Finns) with Finland the country. The Finnic speakers include Estonians, Livonians, Vizhorians and several other groups. The Mera and Myrona Finnic speakers were the original settlers on that site.

Yeah, it's wild. The worst for me was when people called me a Nazi for being against the USSR. (The USSR was famously brutal against indigenous Livonians and Latvian people broadly, which is why my mother's family ended up refugees in the UK in the first place.)

That's exactly why I find it interesting! I really like seeing Finns and Estonians support Livonians, and I like Welsh and Cornish and Breton and Manx and Scots and Irish folk sticking together and collaborating. Maybe that's a kind of romantic nationalism of its own, but there's community in it.

I think that for Germanic tribes, "Fenni" initially probably meant whatever Finnic-speaking tribe they met or heard about, including Estonians and Livonians, and that's the view in Tacitus's work.

Starting from the 8th century, the Norse started to travel more and acquired more detailed knowledge.

Well, yes, but I don't think the Livonians or whoever would have agreed that they lived in a wasteland full of roaming threats. In D&D, those views of the frontier become true (sort of, sometimes).

I wrote a little introduction to this, exploring the continuing creativity, despite profound historic struggles, in two smaller languages of Latvia. Latgalian has faced repeated press bans, while Livonians saw their home militarised and placed off-limits

Other Finnic peoples in the area are Veps, Karelians, Livonians, and Ests.

Livonians have gone extinct. Izhorians, I think, might have gone extinct. Veps are going extinct.

Karelians represent ~5% of the population of Russian Karelia, thanks to Stalin.
