The notation system is (apparently) called "Lombardic neumatic notation" and this video is a modern performance of one of Obadiah's manuscripts: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxtL...

Detail from a Lombardic radiate-headed bow brooch. Dating to the early 7th century AD, the brooch was found in a cemetery at Nocera Umbra in the Province of Perugia, Italy. Now part of the collections at the Museum of Civilisations in Rome. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday #Archaeology

proposal to rename "bold" to "lombardic" so all three main font stylings can be named after Italy.

Lombardic drinking-horn, 500-700 CE

The Lombards, a Germanic people, invaded Italy from Hungary in 568 CE.

Their art shifted away from traditional Germanic styles & adopted local Byzantine & Christian fashions.

Found in a high status grave in Sutri, Italy.
Now British Museum, London

A massive cross slab with inscription in incised Lombardic caps - but is it late medieval or early modern? welshtombs.wordpress.com/2026/07/31/a...

I think it's the inscription (in very widely-spaced Lombardic caps), with more #flowers between the words

An amazing survival. This panel dates from c.1230 and depicts the stoning to death of St Stephen. The text below the figures is in Lombardic letters and reads ‘STEPHANUS ORANS EXPIRAT’ (Stephen dies while praying). The panel is in Graveley church, Hampshire.

Just got a weird idea that I cannot possibly have the artistic skill to achieve.

But hear me out:

The ENTIRE crew drawn like those weird medieval cats. On a page like a title card with the O as a huge Lombardic capital.

Lombardic letters – monospaced! (shall I write a thesis on this? 😅 ) Victorian times, Round church in Cambridge
Look at n and u, a couple of letters are mirrored – curious if this was intentional

The 2nd edition of the Nottingham Gingerbread Tiles 😊
I'm trying a different colour and taste.
Black treacle instead of honey — taste is more intense, bittersweet, like rye bread.

Glazing — yes or no?

Made of lead alloy, the badge is in the form of a Lombardic ‘M’, for Mary, mother of God, and has a crown above with three pearls, a symbol of purity & often associated with Mary. The pin is missing from the back but it would have been probably attached to the cap, hood or cape of the pilgrim 2/

In the Middle Ages, people bent coins when making a wish, seeking a cure, or making a vow. While bending the coin, one had to remember to offer it to a saint. #MythologyMonday #folklore #history #medieval

I think I have it backwards. The Italian word “scherzo” derives from “skerzon,” which was a Lombardic word. Lombardic is the now extinct Germanic language spoken by the Lombards, who invaded Italy in the 6th century. Most Italian words derive from Latin; this one is an exception.

Day 7 of Drawing a Font Every Couple Days. It’s been a week since the last font, and I spent 3 days on this one. Forgive me.

Today: 1900’s Arts & Crafts/Jugendstil/Whateverist take on Fraktur, with organic curves, Lombardic capitals and lots of ornament, that does well in a Brothers Grimm setting.
