In the trees, a determined Longisquama makes themselves known with a display and loud warning call. Personal paleoart I made 😁

Could extraordinary plume-like structures like those on Longisquama and the recently described Mirasaura be present in other drepanosauromorphs? I think it is not completely out of the question!

More leaves and a little "Blep" from a sneaky Longisquama.

It occurred to me to update my Longisquama skeletal reconstruction with recent findings of close relation to drepanosaurs.

The first one was dozens ans dozens of years ago, rendered from bad photographs. It's really bad.

Is that a Longisquama?

Longisquama! A prehistoric lizard from the late triassic. I love his back fan. So cool! And more importantly adorable!!!

Mirasaura is similar to #Longisquama, a controversial Triassic reptile described in the 70s. Longisquama remained a mystery due to its poor preservation and it was used as an alternate bird "ancestor". With Mirasaura, we can now also finally put the Longisquama debate to rest.

Day 22: Longisquama

What would you name this lizard if it was your pet? I’m leaning towards Mr. Flappy

Finally we can confirm that longisquama is NOT a series of unfortunate lizards that died on top of a plant.

I'm going to share something very old, which I don't normally like doing, but it's #invertefest and it's relevant. There's *a lot* I'd do differently now, but I am still proud that I took the opportunity to show just how honkin' large Gigatitan was compared to the more iconic Longisquama. #sciart

Today is a very good day for long-standing enigmatic weirdos being pretty conclusively figured out. Longisquama is a drepanosaur, Nectocaris is a chaetognath, and Palaeocampa anthrax (metal name) is an aysheaiid (!!!)

Back in the 1970s, researchers angsty with the idea that birds were dinosaurs seized on the discovery of Longisquama, a very weird and enigmatic reptile with featherlike structures. But as it became clear that the dinosaur/bird link was undeniable, Longisquama proved very hard to place.

Mirasaura grauvogeli, the new Triassic Drepanosaur and close relative of Longisquama!

I did not wake up this morning expecting Longisquama to be solved, but wow, it was just solved - thanks to this newly-described relative Mirasaura!
Proud to make my National Geographic debut with this incredible discovery: an extremely weird little guy with independently-evolved "feathers" that solves a longstanding Triassic mystery and makes one of the period's oddest families even stranger
Crested Triassic Reptile
Mirasaura grauvogeli had a featherlike crest and a tail like a monkey. “It's been a long time since I've been so blown away by a new fossil discovery.”

Drawing from late 2023, kind of speculative drawing of longisquama with the things on it's back to camouflage with the lycopsids. + a neuropteran also from the Madygen Formation.

Oh, but this wasn't enough.

A new paper by Spiekman et al. now propose Longisquama is a drepanosauromorph --or simiosaur, whatever -- and this comes it more peculiarites. It makes other things MAKE SENSE, too. Those RIBS.

The “plumes” of Mirasaura and Longisquama likely evolved separately from the feathers or feather-like structures we know in Dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Like other Drepanosauromorphs, Mirasaura also had a weird, bird-like and mostly toothless skull

The elaborate crest represents a new perspective in the evolution of feather-like structures in reptiles. Mirasaura was related to another bizarrely-crested reptile, Longisquama, and both appear to belong to an already very weird group: Drepanosauromorphs
