Finland has prepared the preiliminary proposal on the EU forest LULUCF level.
based on latest modeling and data and accounting the lack of wood imports from Russia (~5 MtCO2) it is about zero.

..even when cooperation is restricted to financing novel CDR with geological storage, we see roughly two-thirds of higher-responsibility regions' carbon debt is avoided through gross emission cuts. Each tonne via CDR+geo costs roughly ten times what it would through direct mitigation (excl. LULUCF).

☝️ malign proposals to change international LULUCF accounting standards.

Highly relevant for the political economy of sustainable construction,

using timber instead of concrete, steel etc.

Forest conservation & restoration.

@kevinclimate.bsky.social wonder if you have thoughts?

On my way to the #MooreMotion conference @unigreifswald.bsky.social, to input on the EU policy framework for #peatlands. My takeaways: With LULUCF, HD + NRR there is regulation as to climate & nature. Just the CAP + MFF are not sufficiently delivering to protect +restore mires/bogs! #RestoreNature

If you wonder why we keep talking about land use in Finland, see the light green LULUCF figure.

It's hard to be carbon-neutral in 2035 according to our target when the 'neutral' part is almost gone. No reductions in transport.

How much can Belgium’s land absorb by 2050?
In 2022, 🇧🇪 LULUCF sink offset 0.4% of national GHG emissions. A major land-use shift could raise this to 2.4-2.8% of 1990 emissions by 2050.
Natural sinks complement, not replace, emissions cuts.

September 19, 2026 at 7:31 AM

Siehe climate-energy.eea.europa.eu/topics/clima...

"The United States registered the largest absolute rise worldwide, increasing emissions by +2.2% compared to 2024.
For the first time, China and India maintained or reduced their emissions (+0.1% and -0.2%)"

We're on track to exceed 2°C globally.

Six of the 16 major emitters reduced their emissions in 2025
Nevertheless, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reached a record high.

Greenhouse gas emissions rose 0.7% to reach a record 54 billion tons of CO2 equivalent in 2025

- United States increased by 2.2%

- Chinese emissions rose 0.1%

- Indian emissions fell 0.2%

- EU’s emissions fell by 0.2%

Faszinierend.

Canada warming at 2x the global rate, Arctic at 3x, per the 2026 report. This is exactly the residual-emissions gap CDR is built for, but only after fossil phase-out. Northern permafrost thaw also risks flipping LULUCF (land-use) sinks into sources.
Canada’s Changing Climate Report 2026 issued by the Government of Canada shows warming faster than the global average and worrying trends and predictions for the Arctic in coming decades.

@niklashoehne.bsky.social's viral thread and @edhawkins.org's amplification frame engineered CDR as 'unsafe or very expensive.' But weight the curve by durability: LULUCF at ~30-year reversal risk, ERW at millennial permanence. The ranking inverts on any overshoot-return math.
September 3, 2026 at 5:08 AM
I know I 🪉 on about this but we all need to clearly explain to non climate policy nerds that the apparent reduction in domestic emissions is bogus because it's driven by scientifically bogus LULUCF estimates. In fact we all need to be clearer that land based offsetting is magical thinking.
September 1, 2026 at 11:16 PM
That "fall" includes bogus LULUCF estimates and ignores fossil carbon exports. You guys need to get a grip on reality as a first step. Operating within the framework set by the government is a foolish choice.
August 31, 2026 at 10:16 AM
An NFI does not translate to robust carbon fluxes.

Revisions in LULUCF estimates in countries with robust NFIs offer a good example, Sweden here.

I am tired of the assumption NFI = accurate "observed" LULUCF...

(territorial ohne LULUCF lt. EDGAR)
