bring back lepidodendrales. return to carboniferous. we need to breed lycophytes to be gigantic again, use a bit of nuclear radiation to speed up the process

You ever just get down here and try to imagine what it was like when these buggers ruled the whole forest canopy? Yeah, me too. #iamabotanist #Lycophytes

Botanists of BlueSky...I'm like 99% sure that deciduousness never evolved in lycophytes but please let me know if I am wrong! It would be very cool if it did!

I've moved my Selaginella uncinata to a north-facing windowsill, where it is happily & beautifully iridescent.

Watching the wonderful Linnean Society lecture on spiral phyllotaxis by @sandyheth.bsky.social

It turns out fibonacci spiral phyllotaxis could be a relatively modern feature among plants, with lycophytes being the living fossil still maintaining non-fibonacci spiral phyllotaxis. Fascinating! 🧪

This is called fan clubmoss or "groundcedar". It's not cedar nor moss, but a lycophyte. Lycophytes are one of the most ancient groups of extant vascular plants and once dominated the Carboniferous swamp forests of the late Devonian period. #paleoswamps #swamplife #plants #lycophytes #naturesky

Gaaahtcha. Sequential vs seasonal? But there are no seasonally deciduous lycophytes. Also, can I trouble you for some terms to help me in my googling? To me deciduous always means seasonal…is there a special word for that?

All plants lose leaves - the plant may be biologically immortal, but leaves are not, they are disposable. In some plants, though, leaves are lost and replaced gradually or sequentially, so we don’t really notice them. So yes, lycophytes are deciduous sequentially.

Since I've been working on some lycopsids recently, here's a diagram I made several years ago for a blog post I never got around to finishing.
So, here you go; enjoy some lycopodiophyte anatomy!

This club moss from the previous shot is Lycopodium obscurum. It's not a moss; it looks more like a miniature conifer and descended from giant 100 ft tall seedless lycophytes that dominated the coal swamps of the Carboniferous Period #NaturePhotography #beauty #nature #evolution #wetlands #clubmoss

hell yeah it’s chertposting time, let’s take 2 minutes to think about lycophytes, stem collembolan Rhyniella praecursor, and the haunting enigma of Prototaxites
I'm taking a look at the Rhynie Chert again, so I made a quick size chart of the plants I've already illustrated from it.
These plants are some of the earliest land #plants, being from the Early #Devonian. From left to right: Asteroxylon, Horneophyton and Aglaophyton. #paleoart #paleobotany #sciart
