29 Dec: Carduus marianus is often known as the milk thistle, holy thistle, Mary’s thistle or Our Lady’s thistle. A Christmas legend tells that when Mary sheltered her newborn beneath its leaves, drops of her milk fell on them, creating the white marbling we see there to this day!

Hello #skystorians. I worked on religious disputations in the early Swiss Reformation and co-edited the "Atlas Marianus" by W. Gumppenberg. Now I am head of the History program at Schwabe Verlag in Basel. My current research focuses on Good Governement in German Cities (16th century).

For #SarcophagusSaturday, Rome’s most prominent outdoor #sarcophagus, the "Tomba di Nerone" on the via #Cassia. It’s actually the C3 CE box of one P. Vibius Marianus. After Paschal II destroyed the real tomb of #Nero in 1099, medieval pilgrims attached the legend here. #AncientBluesky 🏺
