#MORC2
Our paper describing a novel DNA binding mode for MORC2 is published! Congratulations to Nika Fendler on her first, first author paper. This was an epic effort and revealed many new and unpredicted functions for MORC2. You can read about it here: tinyurl.com/MORC2-DNA

✨Excited to share my first postdoc paper on chromatin remodeler, MORC2 ✨

Using #cryoEM & #singlemolecule imaging, we reveal how MORC2 compacts DNA 🔬🧬

Thanks to all collaborators from @wehi-research.bsky.social @ccemmp-outreach.bsky.social Uni Melb, Monash Uni, Seoul National Uni and Texas Uni!
Researchers learned a function of enzyme MORC2, that helps organise DNA and turn off genes when not needed. Mutations in MORC2 cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a rare condition that weakens muscles. These findings could lead to new treatments.

MORC2 directs transcription-dependent CpG methylation of human LINE-1 transposons in early neurodevelopment
Methylation of CpG dinucleotides is essential for silencing genomic repeats such as LINE-1 retrotransposons (L1s) in the germline and soma. Evolutionarily-young L1s are transcribed in human pluripoten...

Researchers identified a DNA binding region in the MORC2 protein that is essential for gene silencing. The site on the C-terminal domain reduces ATPase activity and traps DNA. Mutations can occur that disrupt silencing, showing MORC2's role in gene expression regulation. @yeastychic.bsky.social
