Mycologist here.

Most fungi are undescribed species. Many macrofungi which should produce visible fruit bodies don't do so regularly enough to be seen outside occasional soil samples.

A whole bunch of mycologist never SEE the fungi they're studying due to this. We don't know what they LOOK LIKE!

Hi, I'm Sarah! 🖤🍄 I started photographing and studying macrofungi in 2007. Then started incorporating real specimens into art in 2016. Each item I create is packaged with the mushroom identification. My specimens are sent out for DNA sequencing through Mycota Lab 🤘

At a recent outreach event someone asked me: “Where is the most biodiverse region for macrofungi in the U.S.?”

I had a hunch… but then remembered we have herbarium and community-science data to answer this (via GBIF).

So I mapped it out.

Behold: U.S. macrofungal biodiversity, four metrics. 🍄🗺️
