#MailMerge
“I used AI to combine the data from two excel lists and then send emails to people who were on one list but not another. Saved me so much time.”

My brother in academia, you just fucking discovered mail merge. Welcome to early nineties computing.

These Doge programmers can’t even do Word Mailmerge? We were doing those in the 1990’s. Oh that’s right, they weren’t even born yet.

This week I have been introduced to the wonders of mailmerge. Never again will I write out a herbarium label by hand! This took forever to set up but it populates the label from data downloaded from iNaturalist and manipulated in R.

I just accidentally figured out how to mailmerge using Gmail. I've been using Gmail for like 25 years.

oh, you know, just using basic Algebra to build an excel spreadsheet for a future mailmerge.

If only 8th grade Chelsea could see me now.

Reads like a script with inserts for "author", "title", "number-of-reviews", etc.

Could be MailMerge.

Today in software complaints:

If you know you have to mailmerge to print: use real Microsoft office. Or get someone who has it to make a PDF.

It isn't rocket science but it won't fucking work with other software.

Sincerely the only person in a group of 50 who seems to know how to merge.

New villain for my next interstitial game: Riley's mailmerge software. Not personified or anything, just the software itself.

Nine years ago today!
Issue 2.

All hand addressed by Andy (before we learnt about mailmerge and labels!)

And all in hard backed envelopes (before we learned about cardboard packaging!)

Crazy times!

I’m thinking of making the switch. I’ve had it installed in the past to deal with some documents I received or to submit spreadsheets to HMRC, but lack of an email client with mailmerge app kept me on Office. That has been acting up, and I no longer need mailmerge, so time to dump it I think.

These coding prodigies are defeated by a simple mailmerge? 🤦‍♀️ We’re doomed
