In 1992 the US public health service recommended folic acid (FA) for all women of childbearing age. FA decreases the risk of infant brain malformations. A 2015 follow up study found that from 1995-2011, brain malformations had been prevented in ~1,326 infants per year. This is public health at work.

Even sharks can have scoliosis and malformations. Obviosly they tend to survive if in captivity only. This is Stella, the sand shark that lived at Mississippi Aquarium.
