Who’s the black private dick who says, on the contrary, he is the one suffering problems with a Manxman?

Melville’s editor: cool that you introduce all the sailors from different countries, which of them is in this chapter?

Melville: the Manxman

Editor: I see. And this chapter?

Melville: the Manxman

Editor: ok, this chapter?

Melville: the Manxman

Editor: oh, should he have a name?

Melville: no 🐋

“There go two daft ones now,” muttered the old Manxman. “One daft with strength, the other daft with weakness.”

Amongst other things that date me, I'm old enough to remember when Mark Cavendish was the coming thing and finishing something like 20th on stages in the 2007 Tour de France. Absolutely ludicrous career since.

To get back on track though, here's minelayer HMS Manxman

THE MANXMAN (1929)
Suspenseful, multilayered, and beautifully shot in Cornwall, England.

An extremely underrated Hitchcock film.

Giving it some beans, Abdiel-class minelayer HMS Manxman makes a sharp turn to port. I don't have much in the way of info for this photo but I'm guessing it is post-WW2 as two of her three twin QF 4" gun turrets have been removed.

Manxman departs Heysham this afternoon bound for Douglas. Manxman is the flagship passenger ferry for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, a modern, large-capacity vessel. Today with 358 souls onboard. About 1/3rd of it's capacity.

My ⭐️⭐️⭐️ review of THE MANXMAN boxd.it/bNw6dD

Buddies, lawyer & fisherman, go gaga 4 nubile barmaid. Of course, she chooses dishy fishy. But when he exits, she starts inspecting attorney's briefs!

Hitch's tragic romantic triangle is well acted, but drawn out. All damages self-inflicted.

#NowWatching THE MANXMAN (1929). Director: Alfred Hitchcock. Carl Brisson, Malcolm Keen.

Film #29 on my Hitch rewatch is this lesser known silent feature from Britain. The only intrigue here is of a romantic nature...two best friends fall for the same girl! Oh, the humanity!

Yup. Absolute speed demons.

So they'd use the same trick to run supplies to Tobruk etc.

Idea was that by the time Axis planes/ships realized they weren't actually Vichy French, HMS Manxman or HMS Welshman (her sister that got the same glow-up) would be well away.
Speed merchants as well weren't they?

40 plus knots at full whack?

As mines are in the news:

Meet HMS Manxman. Spent a chunk of 1941/1942 laying mines off Italy in WW2.

Why wasn't she sunk?

Looked like a Vichy destroyer if you squinted. So they did a "paint me like one of your French girls" on her.

Extra funnel. Fake bow.

"Bonny jour mez ameees eye-talians!"

As a proud Manxman, I hope the Isle of Man authorities provide full cooperation and assistance in bringing this pair to justice.
