Goldenrod seed stems zigzag across the photo. Each stem is covered with clusters of seeds, the bristly pappus of each seed converging with those of neighboring seeds, making it look like bursts of fireworks of tiny cream colored stars up and down the stems.

A corymb of white papery flowers is the focus of this photo. The flowers look like small ruffled balls sitting atop a slightly fuzzy blue-green stem. The darker blue-green leaves are narrow, about 2 to 5 inches long, and covered with white hairs. You can see golden brown grasses with more pearly everlasting plants scattered about in the background.

Red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea) grows abundantly in the PNW. Its masses of cymes of small white four-petaled flowers are decorative from spring through summer.

Three cymes of red osier dogwood flowers cross this image diagonally. You can see the cymes are composed of numerous small 4 petaled white flowers. The leaves beneath and around the cymes are broadly oval. The venation is typical of dogwoods, curving from a large central vein upward to the edge of the leaves. Red osier dogwood stems when young are attractively red strong and flexible. They can be used in basket weaving

Weedy but pretty cranesbill in a park lawn, and another viburnum species in the shrubbery. It was windy and wet yesterday. 🌧️🌬️

Tiny lavender pink cranesbill flowers grace a park lawn. The five petaled flowers have little white stamens and a bright pink pistil with a star-shaped tip. The leaves surrounding the flowers are abundant, hairy, and feathery looking. There are a few clover leaves poking out here and there. There are a lot of weedy cranesbill species! This one is Erodium cicutarium, also called redstem filaree or storks bill. This close up of a branch of Viburnum tinus, popularly called laurestine because the leaves look like bay laurel, is covered with clusters of white flowers and round pink buds. The shrub is very appealing with a sweeping rounded shape, making for an attractive border.
