63,000 giant cuttlefish last year’s survey. This year: just over 1,000.

Bird flu’s tearing through seabird colonies, tourism’s bracing for collapse, and locals are exhausted by ‘natural’ disasters.

🐠 Clownfish can shrink during heat stress. In response to marine heatwaves, some clownfish have been observed reducing their body size, a rare example of fish physically shrinking to cope with warmer waters! 🌊🌡️

After a year of secrecy from Australian authorities, scientists are now revealing the terrible toll of global heating on the northern & southern Great Barrier Reef in 2024.

More mass bleaching & mortality is underway this year in the northern GBR.

🌡️🌊🥵 Huge swaths of North America experienced a record #heatwave this past week. We can sweat it out or hunker next to the AC, but marine life doesn’t have that luxury.

What happens to #AtmosphericRivers when they interact with #MarineHeatwaves?

Our new paper now out in @natureportfolio.nature.com Scientific Reports provides an answer. We assessed the impact of “the #Blob” on landfalling atmospheric rivers on the North American west coast. Here is what we found 🧵

Our newest #AdriftLab paper provides the first data on how Australian #seabirds are impacted by #MarineHeatwaves. So much gratitude for the 200+ #CitizenScientists who made this project possible
New @adriftlab.bsky.social paper in Conservation Biology: we estimate 629,000+ seabirds died during Australia's 2023/24 marine heatwave. Fewer than 5,000 were counted on beaches, less than 1% of total mortality conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... 🧵

The superb backdrop of Nólsoy’s huge Storm-petrel colony, hosting upwards of 250,000 pairs. Initial checks of our study #nestboxes show a slightly late season, with some birds incubating but many pairs yet to lay. Amidst the numerous #MarineHeatwaves in N Atlantic, I wonder how the season will be…

Gestern beklagte ich, Medien würden zu selten über die #MarineHeatwaves #Ozeanerwärmung berichten.

Heute WIRD berichtet:
- Erhitzung d Ozeane führt zu stabilerer Schichtung, die wieder Hitzeanomalien u a begünstigt.
- Wegen d #Klimakrise wird dies häufiger

Marine heatwaves are an increasingly common component of climate change. Their intensity and regularity are increasing as warming accelerates, the oceans adapt and we reduce pollution.

Worse things happen at sea - Marine Heatwaves
Marine Heatwaves tend to be treated as curiosities that might bring interesting species to our shores, but in many ways their impacts and implications are even more serious than land based heatwaves.

Water has been CRAZY hot off WA recently l.
So many marine ecosystems are in drastic danger when #marineheatwaves like this one occurs.
We'll know the impacts in due course.
Brace yourselves- they won't be good.
Waters around northern tropical Australia were by far the hottest on record for January 2025. Data from 1900-2025 from ERSSTv5. Typically northern Australian water temperatures peak in late summer
