I’m also specifically talking about the 1980s and 1990s when neoliberal ideals were still being discussed as theoretical economics, marketcraft and public management, not the more recent explosion of privatised disinfo and influence operations and internationally coordinated far right mayhem.

instant classic. great introduction to what the left is fundamentally about. surprised to hear Harris has come around on what he calls marketcraft (following Vogel academic.oup.com/book/3977) — the idea that markets are one very important policy tool among many

One of the confounding but potentially useful things about ‘What’s Left’ is the attempt to treat both liberal marketcraft approaches and communist approaches in good faith. It’s an invitation to accept the inherent complexity and contradictions of path dependency in our actually existing world.

Lav Varshney Discusses AI and the Physical Economy of Intelligence - SBU News
Artificial intelligence transforms daily life a little more every day. Healthcare, business, science, the arts and every other discipline are facing new ethical and environmental challenges as they grapple with the new capabilities and possibilities that come with artificial intelligence. In a far-reaching discussion titled “The Physical Economy of Intelligence: Marketcraft, Data Centers and Climate,” Lav Varshney, Della Pietra Infinity Professor and Inaugural Director of Stony Brook University’s AI Innovation Institute, discussed the puzzles, pitfalls and possibilities of an increasingly AI-reliant world. The talk took place September 23 in the Laufer Center and was sponsored by the Collaborative for the Earth, the Department of Political Science, and the AI Innovation Institute. Varshney said that despite the current national focus on data centers, the future of AI won’t be determined by the infrastructure and neural networks themselves. The institutions and markets built around the technology will determine where AI goes, and whether it’s a force for good or for ill. “It will also determine whether we can sustain these efforts in building infrastructure and running models,” said Varshney. “As we build markets for intelligence, we need to consider the economic and environmental repercussions and make sure that we can actually measure...

Vogel uses the concept of "marketcraft", a play on statecraft, to highlight how markets are intensely sensitive to institutional design of the rules of the economic game. He deployed this essential perspective in this lecture to explore the attraction of predistribution via eg shifting market power
How might we tackle inequality at its roots? APEX and @jacobhacker.bsky.social were thrilled to host Steven Vogel for a preview of his paper on the topic. Read a quick summary: bit.ly/3CjeZ41

“[T]he real-world alternative to government action is not the perfect market, but a market sullied with private sector inefficiency, fraud, and imbalances in power and resources.”

"Marketcraft isn't good or bad, in and of itself," says Facebook co-founder @c-hughes.bsky.social.

"I prefer clear rules that everyone can understand that make it easy to attract private investment and enable the private sector to lead and to be guided."

"Marketcraft in and of itself isn't good or bad," explains @c-hughes.bsky.social, co-founder of Facebook and author of "Marketcrafters: The 100-Year Struggle to Shape the American Economy."

"It's a method of guiding and shaping markets which can be very effective in many cases and fail in others."

Harris's term "marketcraft" captures a lot of what I've been trying to say about capitalism. Markets are tools that the state can use to structure economic activity, and they are absolutely useful for solving the climate crisis!
