In response to Governor Hochul's and Mayor Adams's push to ban masks, NYC Dyke March has updated its policies to require masks.
Masking Is Resistance Based on additional discussions with disabled and immunocompromised Dykes in the community and the committee, and in response to the recent statements of Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams supporting a ban on masks in our state, we have updated our 2024 masking policy for the march: The 2024 NYC Dyke March will be a fully masked march.

Mask bans tell disabled people they don’t matter. That since we aren’t willingly “staying home forever” you’re going to FORCE us by making it illegal for us to protect ourselves.

Mask bans are the new 21st century Ugly Laws.

If you are nondisabled and are able to wear a mask/respirator, PLEASE DO as much as possible— in public, at events, and **especially** in healthcare settings. Normalize them.

When masks are illegal in public, disabled people are illegal in public.

Masks, such as N95, KN94, or P100 masks are used in industrial and medical settings to prevent harm to one's lungs.

They are also used by people who wish to protect their lungs from airborne pathogens, smoke, and allergens.

Where to even begin with this?

You shouldn’t have to already BE sick/disabled to be permitted to wear a mask. Everyone deserves the right to protect their health.

Also - disabled people don’t live in a vaccum. We have family & caregivers who must mask to protect us.

It's official: Mask ban in Nassau County, New York passes along party lines, 12-0 (7 abstentions). It makes wearing a mask a misdemeanor (with unclear health and religious exceptions) and gives police the power to fine people wearing a mask $1,000 and sentence them to jail time.

Tonight I wrote my mother and sister who had stopped masking and told them to mask up, no matter what, because I need the support emotionally and politically. They never should have stopped masking, but that's not the point. The point is right now is the time to put on a mask and resist. #MaskBans
