He says the shift east has been running for decades, driven by the simple economics that water miles are cheaper than land miles. It stepped up when the expanded Panama Canal opened to vessels three times larger, and he puts it at around 40 basis points a year over the past eight years. He also points to Asia itself, where production is moving westward into places like Vietnam and Thailand, and anywhere west of Singapore is closer to the US East Coast via Suez than via Panama. On peak season, John says front-loading and tariffs have injected uncertainty and chaos into a system that works best when one week looks like the last, with shippers and carriers reacting to social media posts as much as official policy. He argues the pandemic permanently changed the market from “advantage shipper” to “advantage carrier”, and explains why he doesn’t expect carriers to return to the losses of the pre-pandemic years, with alliances giving them the ability to fine-tune capacity in a way no single carrier could. In his analysis, the war pushed up fuel prices, cut off part of the world’s container volume in the Persian Gulf and added to disruption from the worst typhoon season in a decade and US front-loading. But he also argues carriers have been more generous with their surcharges than fuel costs justify. Asked for a straight yes or no on whether that means overcharging, John says yes, calling it the oldest game in the book: rate increases in the form of “gotcha surcharges”.
