Canadian doctors develop two-step robotic procedure for AFib treatment
Canadian medical professionals have developed a novel two-step procedure that could significantly improve outcomes for patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm disorder. The innovative approach, pioneered by Dr. Paul Angaran and Dr. Gianluigi Bisleri at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, combines robotic surgery with catheter ablation techniques to address the limitations of current treatments. AFib, which affects 1-2% of the general population, causes irregular heartbeats that can lead to serious complications including stroke and heart failure. Current standard treatments typically involve either medication or catheter ablation, where doctors create scar tissue in the heart to block irregular electrical signals. However, these methods often prove ineffective for patients with long-standing persistent AFib. The new procedure involves first using robotic technology to create external scars on the heart, followed by a catheter-based technique to treat internal areas. This dual approach allows for more comprehensive treatment of the heart's electrical pathways. Dr. Bisleri explained that the robotic component provides greater precision and access to the heart, while the catheter technique targets specific internal areas. The treatment has shown promising results, with potential success rates of 70-80% for patients with long-standing persistent AFib. One of the first patients to undergo the procedure was Jon Davies from Edmonton, who had been diagnosed with AFib and had previously been told surgery wasn't an option due to his enlarged heart. After learning about the new procedure online, Davies underwent the first part of the treatment in September and is scheduled for the second phase in the coming weeks. He expressed optimism about the potential to move beyond the 'status quo' of lifelong blood thinner medication. The doctors noted that while the procedure is a Canadian first, awareness remains limited, and patients must be referred to their specialized team. The treatment requires a few weeks or months between procedures to allow for healing of the external scars before proceeding with the internal catheter ablation. This advancement represents a significant step forward in cardiac care for AFib patients, offering hope for improved quality of life and reduced risk of complications.
