I downloaded this game at Williams/Bally/Midway on my work computer (no sound blaster card). I'd play the demo in silence over & over.

No idea that I would create the very last Epic MegaGames title on Earth (JazzJackrabbit GBA), 10 years later, before they rebranded everything to Epic Games, only.

Thirty-five years ago, when I was young, I wanted to buy ZZT (one of Epic Megagames' first games). I could only afford one of four and sent a letter saying so with the money. They sent me all four for the cost of one.

I couldn't have imagined he'd turn out this embarrassing from that.

This year for the 2026 Being Human Festival (which last year brought us Playful Paths), MAGPIE has parterned with Melbourne Megagames to run a megagame called 'Publish or Perish' that gamifies the cutthroat world of academic publishing and grant writing.

It used to be Epic MegaGames, even.

apparently so
October 22, 2026 at 9:26 PM
the rest of this is very stupid, but epic's company name used to be epic megagames, back when they were making jill of the jungle and zzt

i think the name is a silly callback to when epic made cool games instead of fortnite

The pic is immensely ironic, yeah, but I can explain the name other than the fact that they felt the need to cram AI in even there too: Epic MegaJam has always been what the event was called, based on their original company name being Epic Megagames.

epic? you mean epic megagames? the company that made ZZT ?

The world of convention megagames is so fascinating to me - especially now that at certain events they're basically guaranteed to sell out (as Cameron mentioned finding out during Year 2)! I've only helped facilitate one for CBR+PNK, but the overlaps in the planned (& unplanned) metagames make me 🤯

It's time for a guest feature at @retroxp.bsky.social! I'm happy to host the writing of @bloomedwings.bsky.social, on a 1997 RTS from "Epic Megagames" called 7th Legion. Yes, it's that Epic, and yes, you can tell just by playing 7th Legion.
Guest Feature: 7th Legion
Before Epic was Epic, it was already, for better and worse, Epic.

That's what drives me crazy. Because yeah, Epic Megagames was such a cool company with some obvious heart to it back in the day, or maybe I was just young and it was magical to me. Loved ZZT. I remember working on a dumb little "you're a cop in an academy" game in the ZZT engine, but never got far

I hope in future they’ll make something like new Jazz Jackrabbit game. (That one from Epic MegaGames, remember how it was good in 90’s back then)
October 17, 2026 at 5:12 PM
the more i hear about epic megagames the more embarrassed i am for them

Gotta reboot into EpicOS to play fortnite, which only plays epic megagames launcher games and contains zero lines of GPL3/AGPL licensed code.
