@mcopelov.bsky.social is incredibly good at tracing back the roots of the present moment to the failure (sabotage) of Reconstruction, the non-reckoning with that, & the continuing GOP contempt for the rule of law that can be traced thro‘ the defence of segregation, Iran/Contra & Yoo’s torture memos.

Murder has no statute of limitations. A pardon in country does not extend to the foreign courtroom. Videos and memos need to be released.

I was just re-reading the Yoo torture memos this week. In two paragraphs one of the federal government's most powerful lawyers easily dispensed with the idea that the 8th could possibly apply to "enemy combatants" we send to black sites for the explicit purpose of torturing them. Just words

With the Dubya-era torture memos, we could see the legal analysis was bullshit. I’m confident that the legal analysis in this memo is also bullshit, but it’s our right as citizens to know exactly what the bullshit says.

Divertit!

One mystery is why *some* memos are swiftly released -- see, for instance, the highly redacted Venezuela memo -- while others aren't. It may be because an operation is ongoing (creating a perverse incentive to never stop). It is likely due in large part to the amount of legal and political pressure.
