Nope, even with the permissions fixed the tablet app needs to be running. Not a huge deal but I wish I could hide the dock icon, since it also has a menubar thingy.

In 5 years I've never once missed the extra pixels because having a hole in the middle of one of the foundational UI elements in MacOS—the menubar, has never been a good trade off for a negligible amount of vertical height for windows.

Maybe if the menu bar was normal height and this hole was close enough to a hole punch sized hole, it might be worth it to put up with it? But for reasons I don't undertand, Apple went with the awkward chunky menubar.

Which is weird. You'd think with a smaller hole you could have a normal height menubar. I've been changing the screen resolution to ignore the pixels around the hole, essentially making the screen the same size as a pre screen hole mac.
The MacBook Pro Notch is the Latest in a String of Bad Product Decisions
By any fair appraisal, Apple’s new MacBook Pros are pretty great. Some of that greatness is the result of Apple caving to customer pressure rather than innovation, namely restoring ports that were removed in 2016 and shipping a design that prioritizes cooling over shipping the thinest laptop possible. The biggest win is the shift to ARM chips that are more performant while using less power than their Intel counterparts making these laptops incredibly powerful. I ordered a 14" model the day it was announced and I’ve been mostly happy with it. Mostly. The glaring problem with these laptops is that Apple shipped a screen with a hole in it. Yes, it’s a “notch” but that name is marketing spin covering for the latest in a string of questionable product decisions made in the laptop line. It’s tempting to call this bad design, but this looks more to me like someone who was responsible for making a product level decision refused to make a decision about what was the most important thing and shipped a broken compromise.
