Residents in parts of Merimbula are being asked to take a few simple steps before scheduled sewer jetting maintenance begins next week.

New cases of the deadly H5 bird flu strain on the New South Wales far south coast have "gutted" locals who fear more birds could fall victim to the disease. The state government has confirmed seven positive detections, including in two greater crested terns and a giant petrel in Narooma, and four greater crested terns in Merimbula. The government says it will move to a reporting system known as "events", which refers to an investigation that may involve one or multiple birds, rather than listing individual cases. Signs have been put up at Spencer Park and Mitchies Jetty in Merimbula, both popular swimming spots, to remind the community to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and marine animals. Merimbula resident Andrew Dovell, who recently called the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline to report a sick bird, said it was distressing to think that more birds might die as a result of H5. "I'm gutted, it will be hard to watch," he said. "It's horrible. There's thousands of them and we're going to watch them get sick and die."
