#MetCoal
We partnered with Urgewald & 9 NGOs to publish today the first Metallurgical Coal Exit List (#MCEL)!

It's a public database of coal companies that are expanding their #MetCoal mining activities.

📢 We urge financial institutions to use it as a reference to support the transition to coal-free steel.

Nice summary here from Reclaim Finance. An under-appreciated point about the steel industry is that each mill (about 400) has a life extending investment scheduled in the next 20 yrs. They can either lock in coal for decades to come or pivot to commercially available furnaces that run on green H2.

The steel industry claims metallurgical #coal (or #MetCoal) is “special” 🙄
But met coal is coal, pure & simple, with climate impacts that match or exceed thermal coal. Read the SteelWatch Explainer, “Met coal: what it is and why it is a climate risk,” to find out more 👉 bit.ly/4iyOMOn

that's not acceptable but neither is operating a not in my backyard approach if it can be put that way the problem is ph solved alip by metcoal that removes the contaminants for chemical battery storage and scrubbing exhaust as well as plasma that can hold particulate matter these are a retrofit

I understand it's you're reframing it again since you're trying to avoid the point about stochastics so you're back on sustainable — it's not efficient. Batteries use coal and metcoal. They are heavy and wear out, cause congestion and nuisance and deliver few benefits unless in miniature sometimes.

➡️ In total, Glencore is planning to expand 17 coal mines around the world (thermal and #MetCoal) – some of which it intends to keep running beyond 2050 - even though all the scenarios by the International Energy Agency @iea.org point to a decline in coal production by 2050.

➡️ Coal expansion remains at the heart of its strategy: Glencore has plans to expand its thermal coal mines, as well as making significant investments in #MetCoal, used for steel production.

@zurich.com, one of the 20 largest #insurance groups worldwide, became the 1st insurer to commit not to insure #MetCoal expansion.

This comes at a crucial time when demand for coal reaches record levels, putting the net-zero transition further at risk. Other insurers like Axa & Allianz must follow.

Too often, mine expansions are justified under the guise of #MetCoal being a "critical mineral”, with thermal coal mines even gaining permits based on the potential presence of met coal. But make no mistake: coal is coal & burning it in steel plants contributes significantly to global emissions.
