I mean they only mentioned it in the Key Points summary of the chapter on "Supermarket margins and profitability". You'd think at least one journalists might twig that meant they did not examine the issue.

Most don’t. Metcash is a ruthless organisation that screws their captives to the wall, I’ve heard horror stories from people who run IGA and FOODWORKS supermarkets.

Don't blame the workers for lack of productivity. Metcash owns Autopro (left) and Autobarn (right). Supposed competitors...their advertising is identical. Big business loathes competition.

Sorry but just creating an NZ version of Metcash won’t fix this problem. You’ve got to split the retailers.

Labour proposes splitting Foodstuffs and Woolworths from their wholesale arms
Labour would force Foodstuffs and Woolworths to run their wholesale operations independently from their retail stores, if elected in November.

I left industry about the time Franklins broke up, but I think Foodworks are an independent banner group that draw stock from Metcash. They are not aligned to IGA, but owned by AUR. Think of IGA and Foodworks as front ends and Metcash as backend.

I would imagine better?

Instead of independent supermarkets in small towns only having Foodworks or IGA/Metcash as potential wholesalers, they could also choose to be supplied by Coles, Woolies, or Aldi.

Foodstuffs (via Wikipedia entry) looks similar to IGA in Australia: 'independent' semi coop structure that soaked up the local true independents, now under the thumb of their wholesale supplier Metcash. Expensive, tries to create a favourable 'community' image, a monopoly in some locations

I want to start a co-op that does weekly buys from the supermarkets to take advantage of their specials and a wholesale account with Metcash to try and save as much as possible on the rest.

With breakup of Franklins supermarkets, Woolworths acquired around 70, Coles about 40, IGA initially 100 or so, Pick n Pack & FAL maybe 50 each, some closed. Pick n Pak & FAL ultimately went to Metcash eventually and branded IGA. A bit messier than that but thats how I recall it.
