METOPOSAURUS, from the ✨new video✨ : www.youtube.com/watch?v=YULv... dedicated to Temnospondyls 🐸 . Metoposaurus is one of the classic Temnospondyls, commonly found around Europe #metoposaurus #paleoart #temnospondyli #triassic

For those who don't know I also prepare fossils, my work includes:

A lacrimal (skull bone/horn) of Allosaurus Big Al Two.

The most complete phytosaur head from Europe.

The only Metoposaurus skull with intact teeth.

Also I did prepare the only Metoposaurus skull with teeth. Which is from the same site.

One interesting example is Metoposaurus krasiejowensis described by Sulej (2007) which exhibits variation in the contribution of the lacrimal to the orbital margin. This character has been used extensively for taxonomic differentiation, so seeing variation within a population is...disconcerting.

This #FossilFriday marks the end of my amazing trip to @smnstuttgart.bsky.social, and last collection visit of my MSCA postdoc project. I’ll definitely need to come back for another trip! But in the meantime I give you the temnospondyl Metoposaurus and a phytosaur friend #PhytosaurPhriday

Konietzko-Meier et al. also leveraged this sample to provide some of the first comprehensive histological sampling of the pelvic girdle in Metoposaurus, proving you really can cut just about anything in temnospondyls: doi.org/10.3897/fr.2...

(3) Together with the Natural History Museum in Bamberg, we are on the trail of Cyclotosaurus and Metoposaurus. One was the alligator of the Triassic, the other lived like a killer catfish.

Antczak et al. continue to leverage the extensive deposits of Metoposaurus from the Late Tr of Krasiejow, Poland, describing the 1st spinal arthropy (arthritis) in an extinct non-amniote and the 1st occurrence of scoliosis in Metoposaurus via sets of fused vertebral centra: doi.org/10.1038/s415...

Hey @stevebrusatte.bsky.social, how come the reconstruction in your Metoposaurus paper doesn't look like this one? Inquiring minds want to know

Hips do not lie… histology of the pelvic girdle elements of Metoposaurus from the Late Triassic of Poland
The pelvic elements are among the least histologically studied skeletal elements of Temnospondyli, despite the fact that their histological framework can provide a lot of information about skeletochro...

Great to see Geopark Argarvensis in Portugal achieve official UNESCO status. The initial development of the UNESCO Geopark was inspired by our 2014 discovery/naming of the Triassic amphibian Metoposaurus algarvensis, which gives the park its name and logo!

Quarto & Antczak continue the expansive work on the Late Triassic Metoposaurus krasiejowensis from Poland, documenting intraspecific variation in attributes of the lower jaw that they suggest reflect a measure of ecological variation. doi.org/10.24425/agp...

Did not know that metoposaurs had stiff vertebral columns, suggesting plesiosaur-like synchronous use of the limbs/flippers for locomotion, and the tail acting as a rudder.
