Odd analogy, I know. But hear me out. creative commons licensed ( BY ) flickr photo shared by Evelyn Saenz Today the (grade) 3-5 teachers in my district met to look at available Math Curricula to adopt. We looked at 5 or 6 to begin with and narrowed it down to 2. We used the Math Toolkit (CCSS) in order to narrow our selection down. We focused on some of the basics - quality over bells and whistles. We were then left with 2 programs. Neither one was all that great.

In #MichEd, legislators have given millions to corporate vendors, including ed tech/AI conglomerates and curriculum publishers, while schools close their libraries and lay off their librarians.
You can't solve a "literacy crisis" without fully-funded and staffed school libraries.
You can't solve a "literacy crisis" without fully-funded and staffed school libraries.
As of last week, we now have not even one full time librarian in our school district. Obscene.
Despite the fact that any data-driven decision would essentially require the hiring of at least one school librarian per school, we are seeing an ongoing loss of SL positions.
This is educational malpractice, as backed up by decades of research.

Kids can't learn on an empty stomach — it's just common sense (and data-backed). That's why the House Dems' #MichEd Vision would fund school meals to set students up for success. Republicans shot it down.
As a former teacher, I don’t need research to tell me that when students’ basic needs aren’t met, they can’t excel in class.
(But luckily, there’s plenty of research for my food-skeptical Republican colleagues.)
