Something I did not anticipate about the micropond:

Got the micropond situated out back. Next up is laying some curved stones around most of the rim, setting up a solar filtration system, and making a berm to hide some of the foundational work.

Then it’s just filling and planting.

43 species. A few flew over (the osprey and geese). Many are regulars with nests in my yard (the downy woodpeckers). I benefit from living in a neighborhood with mature trees. My yard is about 90% #nativeplants. I have no lawn. I don’t use a bird feeder in summer. I have birdbaths and a micropond.

I laid low yesterday after overdoing it on Saturday. Too dry for mosquitoes here… refilling my birdbaths daily, and my micropond has a chunk of a mosquito dunk in it (pretty sure it’s functioning as a trap). 🫂

I'm glad to add these pitcher plants to my 9 gallon micro ponds. I picked these up at Botanique Nursery in VA. A super cool place to nerd out. (yes micro add environmental interest for local wildlife)

Pictured: Garden with a range of green native plants growing around a small 9 gallon, approximate 21inch round black micropond. In the pond are 4 containers, 2 with native irises (past bloom), and two with pitcher plants. Both are tall, around 15 inches. One has smaller pitchers that are a little bit ruffled on the edges. The top 3-4 inches are colorful, White with deep red veining. The second has smooth pitchers. The very top of the pitcher is a coppery bronze that then leads to copper stripping a few inches down the pitcher. The fully grown copper pitchers are about 3 inches wide, while the red/white ones are about 1.5 inches. This pond has had: damsel flies, tadpoles, blood maggots, rat tail maggots, and a number of other things I can't identify.
